Recently, I have seen a few GIA certificates where ECs have an extra step in the pavillion. How does this affect the diamond''s performance?

I have attached an example below.

Thanks

Some EC have three pavilion steps..., and some four...

Usually on the one with the four pavilions...., the first step (pav1) bellow the girdle is very steep and does not affect the contrast of the appearance!
It does help a bit with the weight retention though...

I personally like the three pavilion types...

3 pavilion steps or 3p can have the exact same look as a 4p or 5p or even 6p stone face up.
More pavilion facets does give more control over the face up appearance but mostly as DiaGem pointed out its cutting for weight.

Thank You for the help.

Someone told me that extra steps in the pavillion make for better light return. I had never heard that before, so I decided to ask here. I knew one of you would have an answer.
