What does it mean - Tiffany style is without portée?

I was asking a price quote on Tiffany style 6-prong ring and showed also a sample of Brian Gavin ring, and the jeweler told me that Tiffany ring is the only setting that carries no risk even with the absence of this portée. As i understood then Brian Gavin one does have portée... and for some reasin it is not the best option. What is it? :)

And also i understood that exact replica can only be hand made?

Portee is bezel or bridge, so it must be a bit of metal making the setting stronger and the TIffany is designed to work without having to use that bit.
