What do you think of this diamond from James Allen? I am searching for a friend of mine...my best friend, actually.

I thought that this stone by James Allen appeared to fit the parameters of what she was looking for, but I would appreciate feedback on it and any other suggestions on comparable stones in the same basic class. She was looking for a stone that was under $40,000.00. She was willing to go as low as J color although warmth was not her goal. She was happy with a VS2 clarity. She wanted an ideal cut. She was settling for 3 carats, but would have liked a larger stone.

I am not an experienced diamond searcher but I don't like the inclusion right under the table.
 
I like the WF much ; higher color, bigger size, no inclusion on the table.

If it looks familiar, it's wintotty's old AVR that she traded in for her new 4+ct AVC. It doesn't look like a K at all:

Yeah, I was about to post that!

The BG blue might be more fiery (high crown angle).

The WF is 0.1 mm bigger and higher color, but this BG blue is $1,000 cheaper and there may be an additional PS discount if you ask. At 40K, not sure if 1K is much of a game changer, though.
 
Hi! I'm Deb's friend (AGBF) who is looking for the 3 carat diamond. I think it's beautiful! I just wish it were a 4 carat... Not to sound obnoxious, I just wish it were a 4 or 5 because I had a magnificent 5 carat asscher that was stolen 2 years ago... Do you think I could get a cut other than round brilliant in a bigger carat weight for the same kind of money? I do love asschers, for example.

Hi Barb, Sorry about your ring being stolen that is rotten!!! Rounds visually face up bigger than Asscher cuts that are the same size or even larger. Do you like Emerald cuts? They give good finger coverage but have a different type of light return than a round.
 
oh i can understand, you dont sound fickle at all! Id feel the same if a similar situation happened to me and I have nowhere near the size you have!

I agree a round faces up larger than a asscher, so you might be more happy with a 3 ct round than you think. But, yes other stones can be less expensive. Would you consider an older cut, maybe with a lower color?
 
I was looking at the PS search engine today, looks like you could get an emerald cut in the J-K VS1 ish range for your budget thats close to 4 ct


If you would be happy with a stone that color, id reach out to a few vendors and see what could be found
 
I, also, looked at some search engines last night. (Barb had not told me that the 5-carat she lost was an Asscher until last night. She lost all her jewelry in two burglaries and she had several different diamond rings. When she referred to the "five carat" I didn't know its cut!) I searched for stones between 4.5 and 5.5 carats with ideal cut; H to J color; and VS to SI clarity. Most were way out of range, but some were in the mid forties.

If she got go into the mid forties, I think she could get a 4 and a half carat Asscher in a J color, supposedly (according to the search engine) well cut. But I don't have even a passing acquaintance with Asschers. I am only knowledgeable (to the extent I know anything) about round brilliants. Even when I buy pear side stones for rings I depend completely on others to help me choose them. I would like feedback for Barb on slightly larger Asschers whose price is still in the mid-forties. Does anyone see an Asscher in the mid forties price range that looks good?

She may not use the information on larger Asschers, but I think she would find it useful. She is still trying to replace that 5-carat ring in her own mind!!!

hmm...and if she was willing to go for an emerald cut, a 3.8-4 ct one might satisfy her size, as they arent as deep, so may have similar finger coverage. And they are easier to find.

My friend visited the James Allen website and got price quotes on both the 4.05 carat radiant and the 5.01 carat k color princess. She and I both prefer the radiant cut, but she likes the size of the princess cut. (Thank you for posting these.) I told her that these were not the only diamonds in the world, but I think that she really would go for size if she felt the princess cut would not look bad. I said that I was sure on her finger people would not be noticing the differences in cut we saw when the stones were magnified...but the radiant looked better to me.

Well, she could put both on hold, get aset images and get honest opinions from the gemologist for their professional opinion...They're both impressive stones!!

Have to ask, what are her concerns with the 5.01? Because it's quite a bit bigger! and a 5ct is just amazing, not to mention, it's got a nice cut (obviously this is where the aset image would help determine that)....Just curious...
 
What about a marquise?

Ok ok, before you say say "no way!!" I just want to say consider it. As a person who just got one myself, i think they have a really interesting appeal now.

I used to LOATH them. I thought they were lame!! every time i thought of one, i used to think of this




but after buying mine ( it was cheap i figured why not ) i was in shock of how flattering and elegant it was. and the thing is, they are plentiful because people dont want them anymore.... so with some effort she could get something nice in a high color i bet around the same size... and the same CTW is going to look SOOOOOO much bigger than a 4 ct assher

Deb, it is super important to be looking at the measurements of the stone, because I think the WF 3 ct round is going to have a larger appearance that the 4 ct radiant:

That radiant is super deep and will appear smaller than the round!!! So if she cares about size, round is going to get her a larger looking stone than a deep cut square stone any day! It is quite possible that this round will appear as big as the asscher that was stolen.

She is really, really bad with spatial relationships, ds. Unless she saw them side by side, and didn't know which was the heavier carat diamond, she would automatically pick the one with more carat weight. If she were given a blind test; picked the one she thought was larger; and found it was a lower carat round; that would be another story! How can we do that? <grin>

I wonder what the measurements for the 5-carat are. For the 5-carat is the current competition for the radiant. Unless someone finds another well-cut stone that's bigger than the radiant and as big or bigger than the princess!


PS-She has to be off-line for the rest of tonight but she read everything that was written up until this evening and was excited. She asked me, "how I knew these people". She can get back on-line tomorrow. She is also branching out. She asked me to tell her which people liked dogs (because I had mentioned that there were dog lovers here.)
