What do you call tiny little balls?

Hi Everyone,

I have found a pic of a ring that looks like it has tiny diamond balls in the shank. Am I right, or are they just set in such a way that it looks like that on the pic?

What cut are diamond balls called?

I think I have seen small football like cuts once before floating around in someones pendent, or it could have been a watch or something?? But having had a look on the net, I cant find any names or even examples of diamond balls. I dont mean smooth balls (!) but ones that will glitter a bit, ie they have facets.

Thanks for you help :)

....actually, the more i look at that pic, the more it looks like they are just set in a way that makes them look a bit like balls.

But still, what cut would balls be called?

The closest thing I can think of to a diamond "ball" would be a modified biolette cut, but that's not what's in your picture. Looks like just your usual pave set round brilliant melee diamonds to me!

Looks like round brilliant melee.

Best thread title ever!

As to your question, I don't know what you are asking.

Are you talking about Chopard happy diamonds which has floating diamonds? They don't look like footballs to me though.

In your picture, are you talking about super fat bead setting showing lots of metal.

I think the question has to do with spherical faceted diamonds, in which case - I don't think there is such a cut. The briolette cut Snickelfritz mentioned comes closest, but briolettes tend to be teardrop-shaped.

Impotent.

I can't work it out either are you talking about the type/style of pave in a ring, (some pave does look like bubbles), two hidden gems set into the shank of the ring or two sizing beads which are metal at the bottom inside shank of a ring?

I was going to mention rose cut but notice someone else has but they have flat bottoms unless they are double rosecuts. Never seen that in tiny diamonds.

I have also noticed on some of the new pave rings shown here that sometimes they look a bit like a bubble, especially when looking at pave on a halo where it's along the side also and also on three sided pave rings. I wondered one time if it was because the melee diamonds had higher crowns, sort of like oec crowns, is that ever the case, I don't think I have seen anyone mention old cut melee in pave work though. Maybe melee with smaller table %? Would extra small prongs on the melee give this effect due to the prongs being handforged. Are handforged prongs able to be as secure but smaller than cast - I don't know.

Yes, normal for most men... :wink2:

Thanks Kenny and DF, I needed a midweek laugh - it's Wednesday here already

Leon Mege does a three sided pave people call bubble pave that looks like little balls sort of......

Wonder if the bubble effect is just a photography trick, with some kind of contrast or shadow or something or high zoom. I feel
like when you see it, you can almost see a space between the crowns of each diamond.

Dear De Beers Supplier of Choice Program, we'd like to hereby submit for your consideration...

The Leon Mege bubble pave I am finding just seems to be collet set diamonds, like bezel set. This is not the look I was meaning by the bubble look I have seen. I think it is a photography thing maybe

It's never polite to mention them.

Actually, this would make a great "Show me your" thread.

Exactly what I thought when I read the title.....

With tiny little balls, that's probably best.

I'm snickering over here!

OP it has just occurred to me, are you seeing the shank like a framework - like scaffolding, and the diamonds as being 3 d balls set within the whole shank of the ring. If so, do you know about 3 sided pave rings, the pave diamonds are set on the side of the ring as well as on top of the shank. Some times they are 2 sided with a knife edge ring, and other times people have it on only one side and wear the metal side next their other ring.

Size does not matter, they'll perform as long as they are top ideal cuts!

Size always matters, especially with tiny little balls! :naughty:

I actually thought they were asking about the sizing beads that go inside the shank of a ring.

Small football shapes are called marquise, but your original picture just has tiny round brilliant diamonds set into the top and sides of that shank.

Unfortunate??

I'm sorry. I couldn't resist!! Forgive me. It's late and I have post-marathon brain, or lack thereof... :loopy:
