What do the experts think of this diamond?

[In the mist of Fred-bashing, I didn''t really get a read of what anyone thought of this diamond...]

(any additional measurements or average readings I should be requesting?)

Holloway Cut Adviser says the following:
Light return: excellent
Fire: excellent
Scintillation: excellent
Spread: very good
Total visual performance:0.4 excellent within TIC range
It sounds like a real gem of a find.

If no one can point out any reasons not to buy this diamond, I think I shall buy it. My only concerns would be whether the girdle is a problem. Of course, I''ll need it appraised before I buy.

I''d also like to buy a matching x-prong band (either white gold or platinum) for this, will an appraiser out there be willing to appraise this diamond and put it in the band afterwards? We''d even be willing to buy a x-band from someone out there if it''s the right one. (We''re visiting NYC in June.)

Well, I'm definitely not an expert, but I thought I'd mention a thread started by one of the experts here. It talks about the appearance of shallow/shallow (pavilion angle/crown angle) diamonds in diffuse light. I'm not 100% sure if yours should be characterized that way, but the thread brings up an interesting characteristic of shallow/shallow diamonds that you might want to think about. Even Cut Nut talks about how shallow/shallow diamonds might not be the best choice for someone with big/dark hair, and do not perform the best when viewed very close up. I'm not saying shallow/shallow diamonds are bad, they just behave a little differently than other combinations of crown and pavilion angles. Just something to think about, if your stone is does qualify as a shallow/shallow cut.

Hi,
This is a 0.60 ct VS2 G diamond.

Now how would I find out if it's a shallow/shallow diamond? Would that be determined only when we examine it with an expert?

And sorry for asking a crazy question, but we wouldn't be able to determine if this diamond is in the hearts and diamond quality class without looking at it I assume? (Excellent symmetry and polish, HCA 0.4. Does that mean anything?)

Now... I wouldn't think of 60% depth as "shallow". The tiny HCA score may indicate a stone in which white light return outweights the other two components of light return - but this is just part of the comment. The piece clearly has a lucky set of proportions that would work magic in almost any conditions. definitely a keeper

Valeria is right. the total depth is definitely not shallow. I was referring to the crown and pavilion angles together. One of the examples rhino gave in that thread was a diamond that had a 40.6/34.2 pavilion/crown angle, which is close to the diamond you listed. It is also the one that nearly everyone in the thread said was a little darker in the picture. that doesn't mean the diamond you listed is a bad diamond. Far from it. I actually think it has the potential to be an excellent diamond. I was just trying to give you a heads up that if you decided to go with it, you wouldn't be surprised if when you look at it up really close, as I'm sure you might, that it might appear a little darker. that's not because it's a poor cut or that there's a lot of light leakage, it just means that diamonds with these sets of proportions will be reflecting more of your head and body, which might make it look a little darker when held up close in diffuse light. that's all I was trying to say.

In order to determine whether the diamond displays hearts and arrows, you'd need to look at it through a hearts and arrows viewer. Excellent symmetry and polish, HCA 0.4, does mean something, but not in relation to whether or not it's a H&A diamond. A lot of ideal cuts will display nice arrows, regardless of whether or not they are a true H&A diamond. And it is not necessary for a diamond to be H&A to be an amazing diamond.
