What are your thoughts on how government is handling COVID-19

How long did it took Obama to declare national emergency when the Swine flu hit in 2009?. How many Americans die?

it wouldn't matter what the president did or didn't do - all governments seem to be making this up as they go along, (some) people are so blinded by their hatred of the right if Mr Trump said the grass was green and the sky was blue (some) people would disagree

NZ just imposed mandatory 14 day self isolation on everyone entering from everywhere but the Pacific islands
crusie ships banned from midnight sunday
internatuonal sports competitions have been postponed and cancelled
we just had our 5th confirned case
its going to be hard on the tourism sector but it is what it is

I know it's hard @Daisys and Diamonds , but hope this way NZ won't witness the out of control pandemic Italy is facing atm and many European countries and the US try to take the edge off of with those same measures (it is too late to avoid now, because the drastic measures have been implemented too late).

I think the geographical advantage should help a lot too!!!

living on a couple of islands at the end of the world seems for once to have an advantage
i think its about flattening the curve
and i agree in hindsight we should have all implemented these controls a few months back but hindsite is a wonderful thing

i don't like the government here but im trying really hard to not let my political bias get in the way of supporting common sence

Lock down in France and Germany. only Pharmacies and Supermarkets will remain open.

Home office encouraged, but for the moment offices may remain open. As well as public transport.

People weren't following the demand not to socialize.

So far there are planes. Each airline has very expensive « slots » to maintain, so it’s cheaper to fly an empty plane than lose a slot.

I read that They have suspended the slot usage requirement for now...

@Daisys and Diamonds it has less to do with “blind hatred” of Trump and more to do with his absolute incompetence. He fired the pandemic response team in 2018 and literally said he takes no responsibility when questioned about it. That’s just one factual example of how woefully inadequate his leadership has been.

No one could’ve stopped the coronavirus from showing up in the US, and Trump is blameless in that regard. Where he is squarely to blame is his short-sighted, vindictive actions to dismantle the epidemic safeguards left by Obama, including defunding a program to fight global epidemics on the ground in over 40 other countries:

That same year, the Trump Administration began to tear down a foreign-disease-surveillance program that the Obama Administration had established in response to outbreaks of Ebola in Africa. That program serves as an early-warning system for detecting global pandemic threats, and it helped limit the extent of the 2017 Ebola outbreak in Congo, which, along with China, was one of the countries that the Trump Administration decided it’s no longer necessary to monitor. As with many public-health programs, preparedness requires policymakers to focus on the future. Naturally, such investments do not generate immediate returns or obvious results. But neither do missile-defense systems.

All this, and we haven’t even gotten into the blatant lies he’s told, like the virus is a hoax. That was at one of his rallies.

Compare this, if you will, to Taiwan’s response: https://apple.news/AdWkrLoKEQ8eKdtv2NZBFwA

It’s impressive how much their government learned from SARS. It’s a testament to the fact that while you can’t stop the virus, how you triage it makes a world of difference. Not all governments are “making it up as they go along.” Unfortunately, it takes competence and commitment at the highest levels, and that’s where Trump has repeatedly failed this country.

im not disagreeing with any of those points - he certainly wasn't my pick for Republican candidate
i just hope now the governments of this world can do what's best for all the people and also learn from this

Agreed! Stay healthy.

Our government has cancelled all public gatherings over 500 people as of Monday apparently so he can still go to the footy this weekend....

Experts in the US are saying self isolation is the only way to flatten the curve. Why didn’t the President and Vice President order self isolation TODAY??? People need to make changes in their daily lives.

People are not taking social distancing seriously at all here in France, unfortunately.

We are next door to Italy and should know better. Government mobilised the army and will curfew several areas starting tomorrow morning.

Pharmacies, Supermarkets will stay open.

This is the right thing to do imho.

We've been following the guidelines and only took the kids out into the woods by car where we didn't meet anyone. Idiots who held huge gatherings and overcrowded markets ruined this for everyone now. Thanks for that.

Alberta is closing schools until September. BC still hasn't

we had 14 day self isolation for travelers go into effect this morning at 1am
i think it should have been immediate when the PM anounced it friday night as they had to put on extra planes because so many people wanted home from Aussie over the weekend
none of those arrivals have to self isolate
we have now had 8 cases with our first south island one in Queenstown

i think that banning cruise ships for the foreseeable future was also the right choice

I think Trump calling it “the China virus” is absolutely disgusting on so many levels. Not that this is new behavior but given there’s already been reports of violence against East Asians related to covid anxiety, it’s unbelievably hateful for him to do this.

Dear President of the United States: I’m Chinese and an American citizen. I’m a doctor. Please don’t make it any harder for me to do my job right now.

Many Americans liked their healthcare and were promised they could keep it ... so let’s make sure we are being fair in our assessment of ‘Presidential facts’, shall we?

I have yet to meet one of these people that likes their insurance provider....i have questions for them...

Agreed! In addition, poking China in the eye in the midst of the crisis is unwise, considering we need the wisdom gained by medical personnel in China to do our best against this. Now is the time only for cooperation.

China accuses that COVID19 came from the US. I wish the left would stop siding with China... The whole world knows where the virus came from.

So was it also wrong to call the HK flu the HK flu?

You’re dodging the point of Obama having lied to Americans ... but what do you want to know?

We all know the virus did not start in the USA. But placing blame anywhere now is not helpful. We all have to come together to get through this.

yes it is the only choice that makes sense now. We have to slow the spread. The shops here were filled with young people this weekend. Appalling to see. Now all those shops are closed. It was the only (smart) choice. People unfortunately cannot be depended upon to do the best thing so they need to be gently (or firmly) nudged in that direction.

Praying the supermarkets and pharmacies remain open and remain stocked with necessary supplies.

So the swine flu originated in the US and Mexico, why wasn't it called MexiMerica virus? We all know where the virus originated, Ebola in Africa, we do not need to invoke more racism into our country DF.

Instead of worrying about how stupid Trump and Cornyn and any member of the republican party, let's get our funding restored for Pandemic illness.

WASHINGTON -- Public health and national security experts shake their heads when President Donald Trump says the coronavirus "came out of nowhere" and “blindsided the world.”

They've been warning about the next pandemic for years and criticized the Trump administration's decision in 2018 to dismantle a National Security Council directorate at the White House charged with preparing for when, not if, another pandemic would hit the nation.

Trump is being disingenuous to say the least. Let's turn it up a notch and start blaming those in charge who deserve it and working towards saving lives.

It's all just propaganda now. It started as the Wuhan virus. It's been normal to name diseases/viruses after the point of origin. China did not want to be blamed, even though it isn't blame, it was just the nomenclature that is always used. So the name was switched. Okay, that was fine. Then China wanted to look even better, and leadership there wanted to blame the US. Then the US hit back with an inaccurate name, and so it goes. It has official names, and I personally think that's the proper way to refer to it. SARS-CoV2 and COVID-19 are generic enough IMO. Stop with the propaganda wars.

Was it also reprehensible when we called the London flu the London flu?.

I'm sure a few Dr. in China knew about this virus a few weeks before the chinese government announced to the world after it gotten out of control in Wuhan. These doctors were afraid for their lives if they let the cat out of the bag.

Every news in China are censored by the government that's how a communist country operates. You can't speak freely w/o permission from the government. Look what happened to the optometrist who spoke too early about the virus, he was first arrested and then mysteriously die at the young age of 40.
