@arkieb1 I wholeheartedly agree with the last sentence of your post - we all should be coming together; and we should all be putting aside our personal political biases, and supporting our individual countries’ efforts to combat it. I said several weeks back - there is a time to do a post mortem and judge how our government handled things, but - in our case - finger pointing our POTUS and alleging he is fomenting racism by naming the originating country, now doesn’t help matters NOW, and my position on that hasn’t changed. There are bound to be mistakes and errors made in a crisis, and people can either get behind our leaders and help push forward, or GTFO of the way; we don’t have a lot of time for much else.

It is the Wuhan virus to me because that is how all other viruses have been named for their origin. "Chinese" is not specific enough and smacks of an ulterior motive. The Chinese government has their hands very dirty for the spread of this pandemic and that should never be forgotten.

Why do you need to rename viruses that have official names? Are you an virologist? What do you call HIV?

Regardless, this is all a huge distraction from the fact that the US is totally floundering. They had more time to prepare than other countries yet refused to accept WHO’s help with test kits. Why? This put us so behind.

I am in management at a hospital system. The lack of tests and guidance from the CDC, state health departments, etc. had been astounding. We can only test the very, very ill. Maybe 1% of people who we have seen with matching symptoms and yet negative for other tests (flu, for example).

I'll throw the cat amongst the pigeons by saying this - in Australia we have a virus that is many times more deadly than this is, what happened is that bats have it and they pooped or died and decayed and horses ate that poop and decomposed bats, got sick, horses then gave the virus to humans here.

They named the virus after the Australian suburb where it originated, it's called the "Hendra" virus and if it ever started spreading it's more deadly than COVID - 19. We have an animal vaccine for it but not a human one. We are really lucky it has never mutated to spread easily human to human yet.

No one calls it the "Australian virus" no one ate any animals to get it, and no one finds it offensive that's it's called Hendra Virus. The point being the world does actually still name viruses after the places where they originated. However, calling Corona or COVID - 19 the "China Virus" is mislabelling it and people in positions of authority should, in theory, either be above that or know better.

In Brisbane we have the term Bogans from Logan (which is an outer suburb in Brisbane). I'm pretty sure lots of people in Logan find being called Logan Bogans offensive.

The reason I noticed it is because I have a few friends that text "smh" in response to things, meaning "shaking my head." So I actually thought you were "shaking my...." what? What is she shaking? Of course I thought ass, but that didn't seem correct in context. I honestly thought it was a new abbreviation that I didn't know, so I went to urbandictionary.com, the place I go to try and figure out what the graffiti students leave on desks is supposed to mean. Big mistake!

I have to say I am very irritated at the relief bill including money for cruise lines who do not register their ships in the US in order to avoid taxes. Cruise lines account for tourism $ in Alaska and Florida in particular. Alaska relies heavily on tourism from cruise ships. I would rather that $ go to those locations.

And Boeing had its share of fiscal problems before this arose but there they are with their hand out to get more taxpayer $.

Between these corporate bailouts that have nothing to do with this virus or every day Americans, and the Dem laundry list of wind, solar, carbon credits, union bolstering, etc.; our government makes me sick this morning.

I have a different view on racists, their views were underground and hidden in the dark till Obama was elected and then Trump as a backlash. But , in this case, Trump, IMO is not trying to stoke the embers of racism, but wishes to focus the blame on China, so that he will not be blamed. Trump does not care about the little guy, white, black ,or Asian. He is receiving lots of heat for his handling of the Virus. He justs wants to place blame. He will not stop using the term.

I am inclined to think the people who shout racist comments to Asians are jerks. I happen to think Asian Americans are very respected in our country and these lapses are unusual. I don't think there is much racism toward Asians in this country.

Black Americans still feel the brunt of racism in this country.
