Wet markets exist throughout Asia-- not just China.

They also exist in NYC. More than 80. And many of them under unhygienic conditions. That is how disease spreads.

I wish peace for everyone. Often we are on the same side of an issue but fighting about other things which takes the focus off the issue itself. I have seen it happen in the political threads and IMO respectfully it is what is happening here too. I believe most of us love animals and do not want to see harm come to them and do not want to see them treated so cruelly and horribly and yes barbarically.

Please, let's move on from the argument about the photo in that first post. It was distressing yes but can we all just say it was not purposefully shared by @jeaniefish to upset people like this. I believe Jeanie's motives were pure. Only to help the animals. She is not a corporation with nefarious motives. She is a person who loves and respects animals as most of us here do.

@whitewave and @mrs-b and anyone else who is trembly upset by that I am so sorry.

@whitewave I am continuing to keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers for an easy and successful surgery this Monday and @mrs-b I hope you are released from the hospital today and are feeling strong and well. (((HUGS))) to you both.

@SandyinAnaheim ((((Hugs)))) to you too. I hold you in the highest esteem. You are a hero to the animals. Many of PSers are but I am singling you out because I know you have dedicated your life to helping them and I want to say thank you.

To everyone reading if you care about the animals please do what you can and again if we can move on from that first post in the other thread and just focus on the issue at hand. We are all on a similar page IMO.

Sending everyone gentle hugs and well wishes. It is a difficult time for all.

Pls dont use that kind of inflammatory terminology. It's insulting.

I'm not trembly upset. Not even upset at all, so please don't lump me in with that. But I know the effects of this kind of thing and it rarely helps the animals involved.

As I said in my post - we're all trying to help the animals. Let's leave it at that.

That was an autocorrect mistake. I’m sorry I didn’t proofread it. I meant to write terribly upset. And from my heart I’m sorry. I didn’t want to offend you. I agree with you. We all care about the animals. ❤️

@voce I was also confused about what a wet market is. I speak Cantonese and our term for it literally translates to “street market.” It’s my understanding that the two terms refer to the same concept.

I’ve been to wet markets in China, Taiwan, and New York. Making a blanket call to shut down all wet markets is akin to calling for a shutdown of all farmers markets. I think the issue at hand is more specifically the sale of live animals, which Lilith & Voce already pointed out is not standard across every wet market. Furthermore, cities like San Francisco have already passed regulations about it over 20 years ago.

And no, they are not inherently unhygienic, though I can understand why someone using supermarkets as a point of reference might think so.

For the sake of clarity I’m referring to those markets where unhygienic practices are rampant.

Thanks for clarifying. I think that’s the problem with using the term “wet market.” The definition varies depending on the source, but if you stay true to its origins, it is not synonymous with the sale of live animals.

For the OP’s message, it makes more sense to talk about the banning of live animal sales rather than wet markets.

Agreed. Also selling illegal species which should stop imo.
