There are so many to choose from. I began as an art nouveau fan, my whole wedding was inspired from that period! But now I lean from Deco to Edwardian.

Living in the south I see a lot of women who sport older jewelry that has been passed down in families. I saw an old european cut (a cushion possibly) that was so beautiful. It had metal work around it that meshed well and served to enhance the stone, not take away from it. I think in real life these stones are more amazing than online! but here is a picture that is similar to the interaction I saw in her ring between the stone and the metal:
