Oh you lucky thang. Love that the focus is all on that GORGEOUS stone.

GOG is killing me with this cut. Enjoy yours in good health and try not to let those chunky facets distract you when driving!

Thanks so very much Exotic & Vix!

Vic: What is this spectacular stone in your avitar? Do you have a link to anything about it?
Great vintage setting, too.

I like it a lot. May I ask, what is the difference between brushed yellow gold and yellow gold? I just chose an August Vintage K color myself. I originally wanted to have it set in a platinum setting, but I''m starting to think something like yours (more yellowish) would be more forgiving to the K colored stone. I also like the width of the setting, do you happen to know the precise thickness? Thanks and congrats.

Oh, my stone's cut is debatable since I'm too cheap to get it appraised by an expert AND since the definition of what I believe it is--a cut inbetween OECs and Transitionals--gets a lot of discussion on PS!

But thank you; I love it.

I was told by the seller (the acknowledged "old cut" expert in my area) that it was a European Cut. Which actually replaced the likely-original European Cut in my deco-era setting after I took a chunk out of my first stone. Luckily my diamond's on the smaller side at ~ .5, which is why I can't IMAGINE how much flashing color you are gonna be seeing with your stone!

Not to derail your thread, but --

Richard Sherwood once said on PS "European Cuts (larger tables, lower crowns, medium to large culets) are typically circa 1920-1940."

Al Gilbertson/"American Cut - The First 100 Years" author later responded:

Another poor generalization. Larger tables came about with the advent of the mechanical saw, which allowed the crystal to be cut into two parts (before that, the area above the brilliant’s table on the crystal was essentially ground away). The saw was invented in 1899 and was patented in 1901. By 1903, DeBeers raised the cost of rough 30% because of the weight savings brought about by the saw. Before that, high crowns with small tables were considered best, since that didn’t waste the rough material. With the saw, saving weight was best done with large tables and shallow crowns. Europeans were still all over the place with proportions (For example, some Germans called diamonds with high crown angles ideal cut). However, the European cut should be typified with short lower half facets—longer ones came into vogue in the 1940’s and a the primary separation. Some of the “European Cuts” were cut with no culets, but most were cut with larger culets. Articles in the early 1970’s from the trade press talk about how Europeans still preferred larger tables than the US.

More from Gilbertson + a few pics of my stone (and of the OEC I just *may* have *slightly* encouraged my sister to buy) + lots of info and eye candy on this thread:

It looks beautiful!! I''m loving the brushed shank

Can''t wait to see tons of photos of this lovely!!

The ring really does look beautiful but when I look at the video, it is choppy and distorted.

Anyone know why?

Thanks all.

Estro: The setting is a Stuller Solstice, tapered shank: http://www.stuller.com/products/products.aspx?gid=8244 I'm not sure about the width, actually. It is their standard width for this setting. I can find out for you when I go to pick it up in a few days.

Here's a link to setting finishes: http://e-weddingbands.com/store/finish.html I like a brushed finish as the more matte finish does not compete with the brilliance of the stone and really lets the stone's shine pop. I think brushed finishes are also just elegant.

K's can be pretty white. White enough to fine in a white metal. Depends on the face color of your particular stone. Yellow gold can hide a "lower" color more. I went with yellow purely to do something different as most of what I already own is in white. In fact, I would prefer, actually, to play up the warmth with white gold but the need to just do a different color gold was stronger. :) My antique OMC (see avitar) is P color set in white gold. And, congrats on your new beauty !!

Vix: Oooo, thanks. You and I are the same type of animal. (And you have an antique house, too - very cool.) What a great link you posted - eye candy or what! Your sister's stone is awesome, too. I can get lost in Al Gilbertson's book, also, for huge amounts of time. Btw, have you seen these settings: http://www.jansjewells.com/category.php?category_id=126 (I just put an awesome red spinel in one.) Oh, yes, and I've been guilty of the driving thing once or twice before I realized what I was doing.

Yssie: Thanks. I think the brushed may update the yellow look a bit, too.

Miss Got Rocks: Thanks. My guess is it was filmed without the camera being on a tripod. It still gets the info across, though.

Thanks for the response!

open the videos page, hit play then pause and wait until it finishes downloading then hit play again.
The progress bar changes color as it downloads.

BEAUTIFUL stone.

the satin matte finsh.

We also chose a satin/matte finish setting (PT). IMO, it''s the perfect match with an antique cushion. I am (im)patiently looking forward to the arrival of our AVC.

Congrats and enjoy!

Its breathtakingly beautiful in my opinion, and I loved the brushed gold.

Isaku - Was that Jon's choice or yours? Jon picked that out.

Estro - You're the one that just bought that huge megacushion? OMG. Lovely. :appl:]

Thanks Collee, Y2K, Stormy

Sonoma, your ring is bee-uuu-teee-full! Love the finish on that yummy yellow gold. I''m looking forward to your handshots.

Awww, thanks so much, again, all. :)

So, I guess the brushed finish was the right choice - cool.

Happy Holidays to you !

La! It’s gorgeous. Sonoma, were you able to go down to GOG to see it in person? Did I miss a post about it?

Thanks Chrono ! :)

Jon is the greatest. He spent lots of time showing me the new cuts and some spectacular individual stones (like Ocatvia, a 3 ct. (approx.) August cushion, a beautiful, low color, 2 ct. August round - oh, and my new 1.46, of course). Jon positively glows when he shows them and talks about them. (Yes, JW, you created something, off-the-charts incredible.)

You know, everyone says to go with the 2 mm band and a bit thinner prongs to make the stone look bigger and all. This is a bit wider and sturdier of a setting but it felt right. It's still at the store, though. I'm picking it up in a day or two as life has been crazy.

I need to go over to CS and see what is the latest with your (fantastic) spinel. My hours at work changed, so I'm around a little less.

What a great video. Thanks for sharing! The August Vintage really gets my heart racing. Someday I hope!!

Congrats for getting that beauty, Sonoma

I love it! The vintage cuts really get me. I hope to have one soon too.

Sonoma, it's beautiful and really good choice on the stone and the setting. I love the brush gold. You better post handshots when you get it! What size is the ring, if you don't mind telling?

Does anyone else thing that Jonathan is trying to get us to think of diamonds everytime we hear the Beatles...that Pavlovian response thing? lol...it might be working for me.

Nkarma: --- What size is the ring, if you don't mind telling? --- 1.46 ct stone (half the size of Estro's, can you believe?!?), size 6 band

-- Does anyone else thing that Jonathan is trying to get us to think of diamonds everytime we hear the Beatles...that Pavlovian response thing? lol...it might be working for me. --

Ah, you mean that when one hears a Beatles song they get on the internet, GOG site, go to - diamond search, august cushion, pick one out and then hit reserve - ? Or if in the car, they put GOG into the GPS and then head over? I bet. Verrry crafty. So that is why they are selling like hotcakes
3.gif
Well, Beatles conditioning response or not, they would still be a hit.

One August cushion for Ashleigh & BOL - coming up.
