Hello there,
I wasn''t sure where to post this, because it
would take both diamond and gem knowledge.

My question is concerning semi-mount rings
that you would find at a vendor (for instance
the adwar site). Can a diamond mount hold a gem
like a sapphire? If so, then how can one determine
the necessary size based on diamond weight?

I''d like to create a ring with gem side-stones
but unfortunately, there aren''t too many
palladium gem, diamond center stone options.

Thanks!

Those adwar.com or Stuller.com or uniquesettings.com are very specific in their sizes, in prongs you have a little give, but in others like semi bezel and full bezel they require a specific size of gemstones or diamonds. Only jewelers are able to order for you. Best to talke to your jeweler or the vendor you are wanting to work with. If I find a setting that I like, I will email the vendor/jeweler i am working with the style number and ask if it will fit my stones or not. They will tell you whether you will have to go custom or not. Do you already have gemstones?

Thank you,
That is important and interesting information.

No, I do not have the gems yet.
If I new their exact dimensions, then why
wouldn''t I be able to place the order without
outside assistance? Is it a policy?

I''m close with a metalsmith, and so he can
set the gems, but he isn''t a registered jeweler.

Thanks

its because they are a "stock" casting company. any variance would be considered custom by your jeweler. The companies I listed are a B2B (business to business) which means, unless you have a wholesaler account and are in the trade, you cannot buy from them directly from a cosumer side. you have to be in the business and they require you to give them sales tax license and your EIN # and I think there was one other thing, can't remember to register with them. They don't just make one custom piece for you based on your measurement.

How bout looking on ebay and finding a seller that will sell directly to you? there are many manufacturers of semi mounts on ebay that will be able to make custom head to fit their setting. A couple I know are American Set and Pompeii3 and many on the colored stone forum buy from China seller Lord of Gem Rings as well, they can custom make to your size specification as well. There are a few other manufacturer that will sell to the public as well just type in semi mounts and you'll see plenty that will pop up, unless you've found only Adwar carries it?

Most settings that will hold a diamond will accommodate a colored gem, however as stated pay very close attention to the parameters stated for what sizes the mountings will accommodate because many of the ready made settings are built for very specific sizes. In addition, I recommend obtaining the setting before ordering the gemstones for it because in my experience the dimensions specified by various manufacturers are not necessarily accurate AND most setters have their own preference / opinions for how much room they need to set a stone, so it is often best to order the setting and then consult the setter to determine what they feel is an appropriate size for that setting.

oh I forgot here is another semi mount site I buy from as well, this you can just buy directly, and have your metalsmith set your stone again, like Todd stated, they are ready made so the size is very specific.

Thanks for the important information.

I understand, and that''s too bad it
seems. The problem I have is that palladium
is just not very prevalent yet, and so
it is hard to find a vendor who sells a
ring setting that I''d be interested in.

Hmm...shucks.

how bout finding the adwar cast style # you want and try emailing whiteflash or another vendor ( i just said whiteflash was because i''ve used them before) to see if they can get it for you in palladium? worth a try, the worst they can say is no right?

Gemstones are not normally in calibrated sizes so you need to be careful on the tolerances - also a 2ct sapphire will be considerably smaller than a 2ct diamond (if they are cut identically etc) as they are denser.

Ditto! So it would be best to measure the gemstone in mm''s before you order a casting in case that hasn''t already been done.
