Upgrading - when , how, how much?

Ok this sounds silly but I completely forgot to get the scoop on Tiffany''s upgrade policy after we bought the e-ring (I know I can certainly call them tomorrow) but what are your thoughts on issue in general?


When and how much to spend? Also upgrading means to a better stone that could possible be smaller than the first.


I think T & Co. say match the price + 25% over? Right now that would snag me a stone close to 1.6/F/VS1 or so I think. In 10 years inflation will probably slide it down a bit.

i was in tiffany''s last week, and the SA told me the upgrade has to double the original price. she didn''t mention the one-time upgrade, but i''ve heard that before from others.

when: all bills are paid, savings are substantial, a college fund has been set up if we have children, and we have lots of extra money kicking around in cash.

how: i can''t upgrade my current stones, so i''ll have to buy something from scratch. boy, i wish i had bought from GOG or WF!

how much: $15,000 (adjusted for inflation because this might take us 10 years!) should buy me a 1.5-1.7ct H-I, VS2-SI1 RB in a classic Leon Mege solitaire.

Exactly why I narrowed it down to GOG or Whiteflash for my recent mini-upgrade!

Yeah, thought there was probably no real "perks" at T&Co. aside from the usual girly fantasy stuff (which I''ll admit I wanted...).

I think I''ll obsess over a pair of diamond studs now and use PS and its members to get a fab deal.

Yeah this is what my SA told me when I was buying my ring.

That might have been me as I did it there. However, I would almost GUARANTEE you if you walked in with your second Tiffany ring and were willing to spend double again, they would find a way to make an exception if the numbers were high enough.

My first ring was traded in and I did have to agree to twice or more than the original ring, which I more than did. I was told it was a one time deal, but in talking with the SA later I got the feeling that if I took my current ring and wanted to upgrade, again, spending at least double, they would do it. Course I would need a new hubby for that

When I was looking at stones at Graff a couple of weeks ago the SA made a point that was interesting to me. He suggested that if one wants to stay with the same shape one should upgrade to twice the weight. He said that if one does less, the new stone will begin looking a lot like the old one [that pesky shrinkage problem, you know]. He also said that if one wants to do less that a factor of two on the weight then one might want to consider going with a different shape. Also, Graff will always take back one of their stones in trade for another one.

I cannot imagine any store that would give you credit for an upgrade would only do so only once.

Just my $.02.

Diamante - I love that advice. I remember reading that in your Graff thread, and it''s so smart. Plus it''s a good bargaining chip for my some-day 2ct diamond!!

Huh? The SA suggested I give the 1st to my daughter when I upgraded. I thought you get another diamond altogether?

FORGIVE me if I have completely missed the diamond boat.

People can do it either way...though if you want credit toward your new purchase you''d need to trade in the old ones. I''ve always kept the "old" stones and just got new ones.

I had a three stone ring from Tiffany's. Very spectacular, all stones were E/VVS1, center was three carats and the side stones one carat each. I decided for my 40th I wanted even larger, so I went back to Tiffany's, traded it in, and got my current stone. They take your stone and supposedly sell it on the secondary market or something. That ring was so expensive and I did not think I would wear it, so to keep it was silly. My first e ring, a round stone, I did keep and made it into a necklace.
