Going from marching against Donald Trump to running for office. Here's an article about women who are doing it and an organization that helps, Emerge America, founded in 2002 to identify female community leaders and train them to run for office.

This is awesome! :appl:

We have a ton of women officials in my city, and even my little hometown, which is 80% Republican, has a woman mayor. I once asked my stbx why he thought a woman had never been elected POTUS. He said it has nothing to do with sex, there were just never any qualified candidates. Yup.

I have to kind of agree with your ex. I am sure there were many qualified women who would have made a great POTUS. They unfortunately did not run for that office.

And in my home state, we have our first female governor. She is not there because she is a woman, but because she is well qualified and doing a pretty good job of it.

No, he said there were never any QUALIFIED FEMALE CANDIDATES, not that there WERE but just didn't run for that office. Big difference.

I am all for not voting for someone based on sex, believe me. For example, I did not vote for Peggy Mayfield for State Rep here because of her stance on abortion, and a personal run-in with her at a fundraising event during which she said something VERY inappropriate to me. So there you go. Meet and greets with your potential constituents can be a double-edged sword!

Monarch, I am a little left brained, so bear with me.

This is how I interpreted it. That there are qualified females out there but they were not candidates for POTUS.

Now I looked up the word candidate and got this - a person who applies for a job or is nominated for election.

So they were out there but never applied for the job. Or in this case ran for the office of President.

I know what you mean. And I know what he meant. What I am really getting at is a deeper acknowledgement (like you were the other day here about what are single moms supposed to do when they can't afford to take the day off or get fired to march) of the real issue, which I believe is systemic sex discrimination in this country (and all over the world) against women. There ARE qualified women for every job, the question is deeper than that, though. I can obviously see that no women besides HRC and Warren and Jill Stein (hopefully I'm not forgetting anyone) stepped to the plate. I want to know why, as a society, we aren't expecting more from our women. The article that Mary Poppins posted about a program that identifies and trains female community leaders (since 2002!) gives me hope that we are moving forward as a society. I will still never stop questioning, not until we don't NEED an International Women's Day, or reminders that women's issues and women's healthcare is important to all of us, or until we finally elect a woman POTUS. You and I might be coming from different angles, but I think we agree on everything here. I do understand your point. I just know that there are deeper issues involved and feel that until we all acknowledge those and start refusing to accept "that's just how things are" we can't move forward. :wavey:

Did you ever see the movie "Hidden Figures" or read about the real women behind it.

That is what is going to advance women in our society to go out and prove they are indispensable.

Young girls are already proving themselves because when we toured the various college campuses we saw many more women than men. We need to improve our schools. Get the best teachers. Encourage our girls to take AP courses, especially in the maths and sciences.

IMO it does women a disservice walking around in a pink hat screaming through a bullhorn that we cannot get along without them. Because as far as I can see, the sun rose in the east and set in the west yesterday and the world went on.

And just as I thought happened, did. The day care center run by a woman and staffed by women lost half their clients yesterday when they decided to close. My DIL feels bad but when you are a working woman you need reliable day care.

The coffee shop I went to yesterday had different staff there and I saw them again today, so I wonder if the others lost their jobs for taking the day off. Not that I can really blame their employer because it is a business,

I have more respect for the women who went to their jobs and took care of their families.

Women give birth. So the care of the baby is going to fall heavily on the woman. Nature and nurture.

Now I know she can be single for many different reasons, but courts award children more than likely to the mother unless she is unfit.

And if she is not married, men unfortunately walk away from their children alot more than women do.

So it falls onto the woman to have to work and take care of her family. Working in one of the poorer school systems I saw what a fragile system that could be when a snow day was called and the weather was not as bad as predicted.

If you are poor and do not have family or your family members have to work you are at the mercy of anything that can prevent you from getting to your job. But in these lower paying jobs, imo men are at the same mercy that if they do not show up, they can be fired as well.

Hey, my son has a white collar job and during tax season they are strongly warned about taking any time off.

So, imo it is not discrimination but biology as to why this falls predominantly on the woman.

And it is also the nature of the low paying jobs. It is easier to find someone to replace you there then it is in a specialized position where you have to go through a lot of training.

Ruby, I have not yet seen the movie, but a colleague has and really enjoyed it. I don't often get out to the movies, preferring Netflix or rentals, but this is on my list. Thanks for the recommendation.

As far as women's roles, parental rights/custody, etc... I have a lot of personal opinions based on experience about that, and I'd rather not get into any of it here. I understand what you're saying, and that is a very realistic, pragmatic, and concise way to look at it. However, no changes would ever be made in life if someone else didn't come along and start questioning the way things are, biology being the root cause or not.

Tale of two countries on International Women's Day:

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau further won the hearts of feminists and liberals by pledging $650 million of the national budget to sexual and reproductive health and rights initiatives. The funding would support contraception, reproductive health, legal abortion, sexuality education, and advocacy work worldwide, and it aims to make up for the loss of U.S. leadership and financial support in the wake of President Donald Trump’s global gag order. http://secondnexus.com/politics-and-economics/justin-trudeau-ftw-surprise-move-sticks-it-to-trumps-global-gag-order/?utm_content=inf_10_1164_2&tse_id=INF_cf1f263005a411e79b1a07d5f3e08d7d

News outlets revealed that Trump recently received preliminary approval of 38 trademarks (all but 3 in his name) from China, including one for an escort service. I guess the escort service is part of his job creation plan for women, though not in the US. http://time.com/4696245/china-approve-trump-trademarks/

LA Pride Parade will be replaced with protest march this year.

In lieu of the colorful floats that typically roll down Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood, this year’s event on June 11 will simply consist of “people moving through the streets” marching for human rights, said Brian Pendleton, a board member for Christopher Street West, the nonprofit that organizes the annual event.
