Can it really be done? It freaks me out that my address, age, marital status, relatives, etc. are easily accessible to anyone willing to Google my name. I have found a couple of sites that claim they will remove information at my request, but I don't know if they're trustworthy.
Internet archiving like the wayback machine http://archive.org/web/ (and many others) ensure that snapshots of the internet are preserved for future historians.
The internet is a bell that cannot be un-rung.
Take comfort in the fact that you are one of 7 billion people, and you are not especially famous, wealthy, or talented. (none of us are).
Everyone's information is available and there is safety in numbers - statistically you are unlikely to be targeted unless you carelessly leave your credit card information on untrustworthy websites.
In my opinion, asking for your info to be removed is more likely to trigger notice of untrustworthy people than just accepting that the price of internet citizenship is transparency to the world.
Case in point: In Canada, people on our national "do not call list" can't be contacted by telemarketers in Canada, but the list has been sold to many US and other international telemarketing companies, resulting in an approximate 10x increase in unsolicited phone calls for members of the "do not call list".
Whose list are you likely to get on if you ask to be removed? Who are they selling that information to? It may mark you as a likely candidate for the sale of other fear-based market goods like home alarm systems, spyware "removal" software, an self defense products.
