Ultrasonic or Steam??

So far I''ve only had my ering cleaned at the local jeweler. They use a steam cleaner and they sell them for $100.

It''s this steam cleaner.

It''s $100 everywhere. I''ve also heard of a lot of people on here buying the Ultrasonic (it runs about $45). I would have bought one, except 1.my jeweler uses the steam cleaner and so I thought maybe because it''s better, and 2.because I have a pave ering and don''t want to run the risk of knocking out stones.

My question is: which cleaner is better?

Thanks, Lorelei! So helpful. I read through the threads and everyone says you need to clean before using the steamer? Clean with what, exactly? The steamer doesn''t clean????

It can get confusing so don''t worry! I think some preclean but it isn''t essential, especially as most don''t let their rings get filthy in the first place! You could either soak and scrub with jewellery cleaner and a brush, or with whatever you use, then use the JJ, or some find the JJ works fine on it''s own as steam can remove muck and grease well anyway.

I have wondered about these home cleaners /steamers (I just use the steamer at work).I read the former thread and was impressed with the response about this product.I read a few people say that they may never have to visit a jeweler again for cleaning...please consider that the local jeweler is not only cleaning your ring,but checking the prongs and mounting for wear and any loose stones...so keep up with the visits to have those gem stones checked.when i sell a mounting or loose diamond i instruct the new owner how to loupe their diamond ring not only for clarity but how to check their prongs to make sure the prong hasnt pulled away from the gem stone if they snag the ring on something.It pays to ask your local jeweler how to check your prongs for tightness and wear.In my opinion this should be done more then every 6 months as most jewelers suggest.It is good to know what a strong wearable prong looks like and what a worn prong that needs repair is like so you can chech for yourself if your jewelry suggests new prong work or new crowns.
