I am going to start this section off to give others idea.

I think it would be great to see an article about the different diamond shapes.

What is the history/traditions behind them? If any?
Was there any inspiration for them?
Do they symbolize anything?

Ill bite:

The Portrait Cut:

These flat shaped Diamonds were cut and used in History as covers for hand made miniatures...
Later in the Art-Deco era they were incorporated in exquisite made jewelry watches.

Lately I have been noticing some high end designers incorporating them in new designs...

One (of many) examples is a bracelet with a miniature of Tsar Alexander I (1801-1825).

Just to give a perspective on the various cuts/shapes invented to-date, here's a couple of useful links:

http://www.diamond-portal.net/eng/diamondsE.asp?nn=1&bukv=A

http://www.diamondsourceva.com/Education/Shape/diamonds-shape-other.asp

I came across the links as I was researching on the Ashoka, a cut patented in 2000 by William Goldberg, apparently inspired by themes of 'Love, Light and Joy' which marked the reign of Ashoka, an Indian ruler in 262 BC.

Here's how an Ashoka cut diamond looks:-
