... as to how to celebrate, on every conceivable level.

It's not just me, right? 35 is weird? I feel like when you're small, you have a milestone every time you sneeze.

Turning 10? Double digits!

Turning 13? Now you're a teenager!

Turning 16? Congratulations, you are now legal for a variety of fun activities, depending on your geographical location.

Turning 18? Yay, you're now a full-fledged legal adult! But you still can't drink.

Turning 21? Okay, now you can drink.

[[crickets]]

Turning 35? Enjoy it, sucker, you're not getting another milestone 'till 60.

I may be overthinking this. Which is why I turn to you, o' PriceScopers.

I don't know if I want a party, or what sort of party, I don't know what I want as a gift (hey, at least that's not an "if") ... I'm just sitting here scratching my head, and I need a GAME PLAN.

Soooooo ... y'all wanna throw out suggestions for the best party ideas, themes, activities? Any and all suggestions appreciated.

Similarly giftwise ... if you see something cool and vintage and around the 1k range or less, hit me! 'Cause it's not like me to be ho-hum about this. I need to be jolted back into enthusiasm. :twirl:

Party it up while you can!!!

Hope you have a FABULOUSLY HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Drink champagne, for sure! ;))

Party party!! Have fun. Forget counting years -- at least for that day! Yes, Circe, you'll have milestones before 60: 40, ick panic middle age! 50: no going back now! But they're all reasons for a great par-tay! :appl:

Hi Circe,

Happy birthday! I am also turning 35 very shortly and trying to decide what to do. I feel like once you are past 30 only the decade birthdays are big ones (30, 40, 50). But my family and friends tend to disagree. My husband and parents threw a lovely dinner party for me for my 30th (which turned out to be extra special because I announced to my family and friends that I was pregnant with my first child). This time around I think I am skipping the party in favor of a vacation with my husband and kids. Maybe it is all the parties I am throwing and attending for kids these days, but I am just not excited about the idea of a party. I am thinking maybe a 4-5 day trip to Florida, which is increasingly appealing with all the cold we've had this winter.

As for a gift, I am not sure yet. If I return the art deco ring I bought as a push present for my son, I will likely get a diamond and sapphire stacker in which case I will ask for a diamond stacker for my birthday. What I really want is a Rolex, but I want new and I want diamonds and I can't justify that cost right now since we are planning to move within the year.

Yep, turning 40 can be rough, so that is why I suggested party now! I just turned 41 and am positive I'm having a mid-life crisis. If you're not there yet, all the more reason to just enjoy yourself. ;))

I think 30 was a big milestone for me. I have no good ideas for you, but I'm excited to see what new jewelry you get yourself. You always seem to have the most best finds. (That sapphire bracelet of yours? *covet*)

A friend recently had a party where she played all the games from her childhood and ate all the food that was popular growing up. It was great! She was turning 50 though...

Hi,

Age 35 was my favorite age. I felt young, mature, emotionally grown up, and loved life at that time. I would do a big thing. I would go to Paris for 4 or 5 days and just feel exhuberant. Its my favorite city and since you are an urban person you will love it if you have not been. So, Paris it is!

Annette

PS I didn't get there till age 39, but I won't mind if you go sooner than I did.

Skydiving;
parasailing;
eating your favorite foods with your favorite people;
a trip to an exciting place.

I have a friend who started throwing a black tie event when she reached 94 and she intends to do it every year until she's dead. When I complain to her about my aging and aching joints she tells me I'm still a baby. Thirty-five ain't nuthin'.

Can't do better than a trip to Scotland! :appl:

That's a good point, Annette -- I loved my mid-30s. That's the age I'd want to be for my whole life! Old enough to do anything you want; young enough to enjoy it; and you're hitting your stride, more confident than you were in your 20s. I think I've been in a midlife crisis for 20 years after that time! :errrr:

I'd choose to go on vacation if possible. Bermuda is beautiful and it isn't a long flight from NYC, if distance matters.

Circe! How about a cruise to Antarctica? Or if you haven't been to Alaska yet that was one of my favorite trips of all time. Such spectacular scenery and great hiking too. Happy 35th! :appl:

A luxury pampering weekend away with a handful of close friends and family? :))

My next big one is next year for my 50th, and I can't wait!

On the Saturday before my birthday, I shall have a party at my favourite cocktail bar with a small group of close friends and colleagues, with a meal in between drink sessions, and dance the night away until we get kicked out at 03:30h. :naughty:

I have already made enquiries about reserving a function room at the cocktail bar when I was there recently, and they said they would get a 2015 diary if I am serious (of course I am!).

On the day itself which will be a Wednesday, I shall treat myself to another once in a life time meal on my own, as I can't ask anyone else to spend silly money on just a meal, and I like dining on my own.

Later in November, I shall take a few more days' holiday and go to Beijing while I am visiting my mum in Hong Kong.

As for presents to myself, I have started to collect suitable South Sea Pearls to make a grand necklace that I dubbed my Wilma Flintstone necklace, hopefully, it will be completed in time for the occasion.

While in Hong Kong in November, I may treat myself to some CSs by attending the jewellery show that I attended last year, and have a piece of jewellery made to mark the occasion. A cabochon blue/green stone would be nice to go with my two ruby cabochons I bought at the show to make an cigar band right hand ring.

As for this year, I shall be in London, having a nice meal, then a bit of shopping, to be followed by going to the theatre in the evening. This has been planned before I decided to go to Paris beforehand to attend the Cartier exhibition.

I always take a day off work for my birthday, celebrate it with a meal, and buy myself a present.

OP, enjoy your birthday, whatever you decide!

DK :))

So young! Happy birthday :!: :wavey:

I'm buying myself a diamond to celebrate 35th. I feel it's the right age to give myself a substantial gift. As far as a party, I'd like to rent a large house on a lake and invite friends and family for the weekend. No idea how much that costs . Need to research if it's in the budget.

OMG I just thought of another amazing way to celebrate your birthday if you only have a weekend. A weekend at The Point!!!!!! It was my favorite romantic trip with my dh! It's in the Adirondacks and very very very special. It was a former Rockefeller camp. We went Christmas weekend 2005 Friday through Sunday. I cannot even begin to describe how special it is and how pampered they make you feel. There is a private chef 24/7 to accommodate your every need and so much to do. Anything you want they make it happen. Seriously.

If you can make it work for your budget (it's not inexpensive) go here. You will not regret it. I promise.

ETA: I couldn't remember the name of the lodge we stayed in at The Point but my dh remembered...Lookout is the name. It was amazing.

Ah, 35...probably the sexiest age of all! :naughty: People finally take you seriously, and you're still young enough to have a blast.

Isn't that funny Laurie because I feel as if 35 was about the time that I was finally set free from 'crises' :)
Turning 40 was exciting for me!
All of these suggestions is really great. I would second the 'weekend away' suggestion because it can mark the occasion in a timely manner, doesn't require a long lead time and yet give you that fantastic holiday feeling.
As for purchases...hmmm how about a different type of cs than you've ever worn previously?
don't forget 40 is going to require an even bigger spend heheh

No specific suggestions for you, Circe, but I have to concur - 35 was a GREAT time for me. I loved that age.. and would go back there in a heartbeat! :praise:

I hope you have a FABULOUS birthday, what ever it is you decide to do and how you want to mark it "gift wise"... just enjoy every moment!! You are young, healthy, intelligent, motivated, inspirational and loved... you got the whole world at your finger tips, my friend!!! HAVE A GREAT DAY!

Hi Circe !
My husband just turned 35 and it evidently was very traumatizing for him ! He started taking a serious interest in retirement planning and would refer to himself as old hehe! He gave up his junk food addiction and started working out. I actually caught him whistling " I'm bringing sexy back" ! My husband will never admit this but he loves boy bands especially 'N Sync so for his birthday we have front row seats to see Justin Timberlake this weekend! It's his birthday present but I'm definitely going to enjoy pretending Justin is singing just to me hahaha!
Can't wait to hear what you do to celebrate ! Have a wonderful birthday!

Enjoy! It is a great age to be. Solid position on the young side of middle age. I am about to turn 58. Just beginning to notice middle age looks turning closer to old lady ones when I look in the mirror. Enjoy life while you can whatever the age :-) Main thing to pursue is good health. Blessings to you!

This is exactly what I did and I was coming here to post that suggestion for you. (Because I lack imagination! And objectivity!) I'd say that 40 & 50 are going to be milestones too so don't fret too much about making the most of this "last hurrah". :wink2:

Dunno, but...

Happy Birthday to you. Happy Birthday to you. Happy Birthday dear Circe, Happy Birthday to you.

Let's go shopping. :))

Happy birthday! :appl: Have a party or take a trip! I vote trip because with 2 kids I can't do that, but if I could, I would. lol

He heheh! Ladies, I love all of your ideas ... I'm reading and pondering! (And will be back with individualized replies after a long bath to soak out the tension of a day spent on three damn hours of sleep - right now, I feel like I'm going to be turning thirty five HUNDRED.). I love the idea of a weekend getaway ... I just need to figure out a place close enough to make it worth our while! At most, it could be from late Wednesday night to early Monday morning ... hmmmm.

Aw, come to Scotland. Honestly, just dooooo iiiit! It's a reasonable flight - you can fly direct from JFK or Newark, and it's not a bad long weekend trip at all (I've done it the other way round many times).

Fly to Glasgow or Edinburgh and I'll meet you at the airport - if it helps, I can drive you straight to my best friend's vintage store? :naughty: Ah, c'mon, you know you want to!

(But don't let me influence you  )

ETA, again, not wanting to influence you, but this restaurant was fitted out at the same time as the Queen Mary, and in the same style. I really do think you'd like it.http://www.roganoglasgow.com/

Oh, believe me, I LIKE this plan! If we have the miles, you might indeed find yourself playing inadvertent tour guide!
