A colleague of mine showed me a ring today that had 3 beautiful and sizeable diamonds in it.

They looked more like cushions than rounds to me - and definitely an old cut.

There was also an extra facet on the culet.

She said that she was told by a diamond dealer in Amsterdam that it was a ''Tsov'' or ''Rus'' cut. She was also told that the 3 stones were cut from the same diamond.

The ring belonged to her great aunt (and she must be in her 70''s herself), whose husband was out in India and South Africa in the early part of the 20th Century. He was a gambler apparently and she the ring was won from some Soviet guy in a game of cards.

I said I''d see if I could find anything out about the cut and possible origins for her.

Any ideas or info anyone?

My first thought is an OMC which is cushion shaped and the culet has been "chopped off" to become another facet. However, I've never heard of a Tsov or Rus (russian?) cut.

Thanks Chrono, that is exactly what I thought when I saw it, but she was insisting it was this other cut.

She also thinks that it has 59 facets - which clearly isn't the case looking at the stone.

They looked very like the ones you've posted above - although you couldn't see that circle where the culet is through the table, which I thought was quite odd.

They are gypsy set in a big heavy gold band - almost certainly a man's ring - so it was difficult to see the whole stone.
