Good day to all.

After shopping around for a diamond (engagement) , I started getting really interested in them. I'm in no rush to buy either. I want to understand what I pay for.

The problem is ; where I live, ALL the jewellery stores have ridiculous prices. All diamonds that I have been shown had no sparkle and clear inclusions for prices insanely marked up compared to online.

I understand the 4c's. Very simple.

The light "performance" , thats a bit of a different story.

I am currently looking for a diamond of approx 0.75 carat for a center stone. I don't want to spend more than 4500-5000$CAD on the center diamond. With that being said, I would think i could get a great diamond of that size.

With the information below, could someone explain why I shouldn't pull the trigger on this diamond?
I understand we would need to see it in person to know for sure, but is there any red flags?

The immediate thing I notice is that it’s an Internally Flawless stone. That’s fine if you really want that for mind clean or cultural reasons, but you could decrease the clarity rating, still have an eye clean stone, and either save money or use the price difference to get a larger stone.

You could get a much larger diamond if you went down several grades in clarity. IF is overkill...as long as its eyeclean it should be fine. You could get an eyeclean VS2 or SI1 that would be much larger in carat weight for a comparable price.

I'm a clarity freak as well and initially really wanted an IF stone, so I understand your choice of clarity. However, if you go a bit down in clarity - e.g. To VVS - you could notch up the color (my choice of action as a perfectionist and not size enthusiast). But everyone has their own 4C priorities =)2

In that price range (4kUSD) i can only find 0.85 or lower in VS2 clarity or above. Using the HCA tool, narrows it even more towards .75.

All A Cut Above stones from Whiteflash (like the 2 I posted) are at the pinnacle of light performance. The second one I posted is a 0.83 VS2.

Could you explain why the performance would be better? Learning.

They wouldn’t necessarily be BETTER performing than the one you posted about, they are just assuredly FANTASTIC performers and easy to choose from for me to show you how far your money could go if you’d decreased your clarity requirements.

Thanks for all the replies!
Whiteflash is USD + duties i believe.

So 3500$ = 4300$Cad
15% Tax now at 4900$
I was told duty is approx 6.5%?
So now at 5500$. Goes up quick haha.

So lets go with 3500$ on whiteflash.

Size doesn't bother us too much. I want sparkle. Retrotreegal is on the right track.

The information I posted, with the table/depth, crown and pavillon. The sparkle could be there correct?

This diamond is approx 3000$USD incl. All fees

I'm stubborn! Love the idea of clean.

Many of my friends are married now. All of them purchased a stone of under 1 carat, we are low key. im looking more for performance.

A quick look on James Allen shows that stone (0.75 H IF excellent cut) should be around $2,900 so that’s a fair price.

Ok but, unless you’re getting into a cloudy SI stone, light performance is not affected by clarity. I get that some folks love the idea of a flawless interior to their stone, but you’re paying for something that you will never see the difference without a microscope. If you still want IF, then I would request an ASET of the stone you posted and if it looks good, I’d call it a day. If you want a slightly larger well cut lower clarity but still eye clean stone, then I’d be happy to help you look.

And james allen charges duty. This one is including duty.

Back to a previous post.

Could the performance of this stone be as good has " a cut above " ? Or this would not be possible for a reason

Thanks

Yes, that and laying you eyes on an actual video or in person. If the ASET shows excellent light return and the video shows no dead spots or leakage, then you got yourself a good performer.

I get you, we are low key too so wanted nothing too blingy and wanted clean for my own mind. Also IF tones are more rare so hence I initiallly really wanted IF. Ended up with a VVS2, E, triple Ex, HCA 1 stone of 0.8 carats though that I love. Price was about 4500 usd.

A bit controversial, but I also did not buy a branded cut e.g. ACA. I know many do as it's certainly an excellent performer but I just wanted to find an excellent enough performer myself. A treasure hunt

Absolutely nothing wrong with a treasure hunt. I’d consider doing the same as you. but for quickie demonstrative purposes of size increase with lower clarity but still being a sparkler, you can’t beat going to the WF website. =)

Are you satisfied? Would you do it differently? With the diamonds I've seen in my area i think I can't go wrong. But with a <2 on the HCA and triple Ex Im scared of still ending up a very leaky diamond.

HCA <2 shows angles are complementary - therefore very unlikely to have leakage.

Those aren’t any bigger than the one in his original post, and they aren’t any cheeper.
True - but if the OP is looking for performance... :P

True, it's a great way to learn too how a great diamond should look like ! :)

Yes I am, couldn't be more happy actually. But I was very antsy after the purchase, slightly paranoid as it was not certainly a great performer. So after the purchase, I sent pictures here and asked tons of questions. Finally I felt assured that my eyes didn't lie and the diamond is great. Now I feel way more attached to it as it was the result of my own long treasure hunt :) your stone looks beautiful, I had the same guarantee as you had prior to my purchase. You can always return it afterwards if it's not to your liking. Also those ASET images would put your mind to rest.

If the ASET and video looks good, then I think it's right up your alley. I hope you have the diamond reserved. I actually bought one just like that for my now fiance. She was very specific on size and didn't want anything bigger. So I could spend it all on quality.

Of course, if you change your mind later, I would suggest you buy from a vendor with an easy upgrade policy.

Like PP said, I'd request an ASET for your first posted stone.

No ASET Available unfortunately. Bought it. Ill see it. Have 30 days to decide. Thanks.
