I posted this on the colored stone forum, but they suggested I post my question here...

Can a treated pink diamond lose its color?

The stone is EGL certified, reportedly treated with a high pressure process to create the pink color, from a jeweler with whom the retailer had an 8 year relationship. The stone was not substituted - same inclusions and identifier on the girdle. But poof! the pink color is gone.

I searched within this forum for this question and saw only one poster who noticed that her pink diamonds were "fading". The only suggestion was that there might be buildup on the stones.

The retail jeweler has confirmed that the color is no more, gone, nada.

It''s a stumper. Any thoughts out there?

Thank you.

Color treatment could have been misrepresented to the retailer and even supplier...there are some surface treated stones entering the market...http://www.allbusiness.com/retail-trade/miscellaneous-retail-miscellaneous/4223439-1.html

Just a wild guess...

Good luck.

there is a surface coating treatment - sounds like the case

coating treatment explained here http://www.diamonds.net/news/NewsItem.aspx?ArticleID=18267

HPHT treatments are quite final - so I can not believe there would be a color change - even after heating at retipping temperatures. In fact after heating the pinks should go brighter for a few hours.
