It's become clear that we need a separate thread on this deeply divisive topic. :lol-2:

So, top sheet - yay or nay?

HI:

YES. Absolutely!

cheers--Sharon

Not anymore. I live in a hot climate and got tired of messing with unnecessary extra layers of bedding. Now my beds each have a mattress cover, a fitted sheet and pillowcases, with a thin, easy care cotton blanket folded up at the foot of each bed (two blankets in the winter).

So instead of washing a top sheet along with the fitted sheet and pillowcases, I just wash the blanket along with them instead. No more top sheet, comforter or duvet. :)

Yay, as someone who gets very hot in bed, it allows me to slide the duvet off and still have some cover. Then when I’m cold, I just pull the duvet back on. The top sheet also gives me some coverage when DH yanks all the duvet on to his side of the bed

Top sheet. Always!

Maybe a sleeping bag on the floor would be the easiest way to go.....:lol-2::lol-2::lol-2:
Don't disturb the bed at all!

We have a duvet covers that are thin like a top sheet. Need to change that regularly due to my spoiled dog sleeping with us.

So my vote is always, event though it is not technically a sheet

We use a blanket instead of a comforter in a duvet.

To me sheets and pillow cases serve a purpose similar to that of underwear ... preventing blankets, shirts, and pants from getting more soiled.
Using underwear and sheets means some shirts, pants, and blankets do not need washing as frequently.

Similarly socks, if changed often, can help prevent shoes from absorbing foot odor.

our summers are getting hotter
yes yes yes always a top sheet
its harder and harder to sleep but i still like something on my shoulders
also Gary sleeps on his back with his arms on top of the covers by his sides so we need the turn down of the top sheet
im not going to wash a blanket or a devet cover every week and that would get stinky quick
oerhaps i need a euro to help me with the changing of the duvet cover - i strugle with it and swear and curse
not sleeping with a top sheet feels yucky and unclean to me

the way some people layer the thing up with so many pillows i'd say that would be a good plan for some ! :lol-2:

the Euros must be all asleep right now
waite till they wake up to join the debate !

remember i need good instructions for how to change the duvet cover with as little bother as possible

Hubby and I always use a top sheet.
Daughter hasn't used a top sheet since college.

Never ever. Nope. Not once.
I will strip the top sheet off of hotel beds, AirBnb’s, you name it. Goes on the floor.

I give my mom all our top sheets, and she rips them into strips and weaves them into rugs with her loom. :)

No - I get all tied up and tangled in a top sheet. We wash our duvet cover when we wash the rest of our linen

Exactly this.

@Daisys and Diamonds , I turn the duvet cover inside out, put my arms inside it to the far end and grab two corners of the duvet, then roll the cover over the length of the duvet. It's easy for any size up to king, then it gets more annoying!

I always thought you weren’t supposed to put anything over a duvet? Something about it squashing the fibres so there is less air trapping and therefore it’s less warm?? Might be a European view of things!

Definitely. I wash the sheets and comforter cover every 5 days or so and I love the feeling of a crisp top sheet.

Summer, Winter, Autumn or Spring.
The top sheet is lovely against my skin.

And I sleep with a winter comforter all year long. I keep it very chilly in the bedroom no matter the season and find it the best way to sleep and the winter comforter is soooo soft. With the top sheet.

I find it very luxurious.

Here's a photo showing our top sheet peeking out. Please excuse the messy bed. The kitties prefer it that way what can I say and they rule the roost so to speak.

I promise our bed usually is very neatly made. Til the cats decide they want it messy that is. :cheeky:

Top sheet all the way. :)

I put the top sheet *under* the duvet.

Nope. Both hubby and I get all twisted and tangled up in it. If it's tucked in tight, I can't get warm - I need a comfy cocoon, no matter the season.

If we are sleeping in a bed other than our own (hotels, rentals) then yes, we deal with the top sheet. Because, ick.

I always use a top sheet and some kind of cotton blanket or matelesse over it. I get warm when I sleep, but need some kind of cover, so I can still have the top sheet if the blanket gets too warm. I remember being in Vienna at the Hotel Imperial where there was just a big fluffy duvet over the fitted sheet. The room got so warm during the night, and the duvet was making me so hot. I couldn't get rid of the duvet as then I had nothing. I ended up getting the cotton robe from the bathroom and covering myself with that as it was cooler than the duvet. Ever since that time, when I travel to Europe, I bring a silk sleep sack so that I can ditch the duvet when needed and still have something to cover myself with.....So yes, I always have a top sheet.

Top blanket with duvet for the winter. I find top sheets kind of annoying, but I’m accustomed to them.

Always a top sheet! DH is super oily (or something), and always dirties up his side of the sheets quickly lol. I use the top sheet ($) to save my down douvets ($$$$$) and other blankets.
I didn’t sleep with a top sheet for years when it was just me though. I probably would now as it feels cozier.

They tangle my legs and are one more thing to throw off when I get way too hot at night. DH uses a top sheet with his comforter. I use just my comforter with a separate throw for my feet. My comforter gets washed weekly anyway. (Nothing expensive. Just replaced my 18 year old ($20 clearance) comforter with a $35 one. I'm too hard on them to buy anything $$$$)

Yes, we do have separate blankets. DH moves too much and I am super sensitive to having blankets touch me sometimes. Plus the too hot at night thing leaving me throwing them on/off all night kept him awake. So his king sized comforter goes on his side of the bed and mine goes on my side of the bed. Wish we had done it years ago!

missy, please be very careful.

It looks like they've planned something, and are just waiting for you to fall asleep. :evil2:
