Opinions were split in the previous thread on whether to halo the aqua. I’m now considering setting it in a toi et moi ring with a round diamond. Is this a good solution? Anything to watch out for? Any changes you would suggest? Thanks for your input!

On a side note, the ASET for the aqua looks really cool!

I voted no as I believe the diamond is too big and sparkly, and overwhelms the Aqua.

Personal preferences and all that.

I agree with @dk168 -- the apx 9mm diamond seems to overwhelm the aqua IMO -- but personally I like the toi et moi idea -- could you go with a smaller diamond, maybe 7-7.5mm, so the two stones balance & complement each other?

The 7.7 hits the spot for me!

I like the 7mm. I think it's just a tad smaller and creates a nice balance with the aqua.

My vote is for the smaller one, I think you really need to give some advantage to the aqua for it to stand up against a diamond.

I don't think a round stone looks good with the aqua's shape. Another elongated or perhaps squarish stone would give it more symmetry and balance, in my VERY humble opinion.

In case it is helpful, DK did this platinum two-stone for me -- the opposed bar-cut rectangle precision-cut by Jerry Newman is a 1.56ct Indicolite Tourmaline (7.2 x 5.3mm) paired with a 0.205ct BGD super-ideal (3.75mm)

I like the round diamond, but I would go smaller still--maybe 6 mm? You want the diamond to almost reflect the aquamarine, or else the aqua will just look dull. Also, it would be fascinating to see the aqua with an OEC or OMC, for the contrast in old and new cutting. I don't know if it would work, I just think it would be interesting.

Do you have photos of the profile? Do the stones sit at different heights?

What a beautiful combo! You certainly seem to have a wide ranging source of diamonds to try!

I am worried that the difference in brilliance might not go well together. Do you have these gems in person?

Yes I have these gems in person, I think the contrast in shape, color, and brilliance/facet pattern makes the combo more interesting. The 6.5 mm round will sit quite a bit lower than the aqua in the setting like marymm’s.

Thanks @marymm that’s very helpful! How do you like DK’s work? Is there anything you would change about the piece? Do you find that the diamond reflects colors from the tourmaline since it sits lower in the setting?

I am very pleased by DK's work -- I have over a dozen rings he's made for me -- I am also very pleased with his customer service and responsiveness.

For new projects, I reach out to him with images of what I'm looking for, very often starting with an image of something he's already made and then additional images of other pieces with the tweaks I'd like, and including images/stats of my stone(s) and ring size and metal choice.

For my Tourmaline/diamond ring, no, the diamond is a white beacon of light -- the two stones orbit and complement each other but stand/perform independent of the other.
