OK - I have a 1.71 diamond that is set in platinum, Tiffany-style setting. (Photos soon, I promise!!!) While I am thrilled with the diamond (thanks ERD!!!) I am becoming increasingly at odds with the setting. To cut a long story short, we purchased a 0.5 carat diamond set in a Tiffany-style setting from our local (and v. expensive!) jewellers here in the UK. When we went to NY a couple of years ago, we upgraded the diamond to a 1.7

so I was pretty pleased to say the least - big difference!! Anyway, I kept the band and had ERD set the new diamond into a Tiff-style setting, so basically they attached a 6-prong basket. I was very pleased with the result, however now I have two very young children and the prongs are quite spiky

- it also, to me is not quite Tiffany enough, without meaning to sound snobby!! It is particularly highly set as well, and obviously with my two little girls is not that practical. The more I see Tiffany''s original design, the more I realise that I would like to have it set lower and better - probably a whole new band, instead of just attaching the setting. I will probably ask my local jeweller, who is currently making me a 5-stone anniversary ring to re-set the stone, but as another though I wondered if I could buy the ''cheapest'' Tiffany setting, literally from Tiffanys and then have him put my stone (which will obviously be considerably larger) into the Tiffany and CO setting. WOuld this work??????? Sorry if this is really complete madness, just wanted advice and opinions.xx

Hey blondie, I''m not sure that it would work if you''re trying to put a 1.7ct stone into the smallest size tiffany setting. They''d have to alter the prongs a lot and even then I''m not sure if they could actually do it. Maybe keep an eye on signed pieces and see does an authentic tiffany ring come up. I just checked it and they have a lovely ring on it at the momenthere
I don''t know if I''d mess with the setting though-I''d probably keep this ring as is and maybe set your 1.7 in a different setting.

someone else just recently asked this same question. there is no way a 1.7 stone will fit into the head of the smallest tiffany setting, which I think is like .20 carats. the whole head would have to be remade and you''d loose the look you are trying to get. Quest and WF both make really nice Tiffany repro''s, Quest being one of the closest I''ve seen. also, check out Mark Morrells Sunburst setting, it would look fabulous with a 1.7 stone.

I highly recommend the exceldiamonds.com tiffany replica settings, after just buying one myself. Great product and very affordable. I wouldn''t recommend getting something with a small diamond and resetting a larger stone as prongs are ''made to fit'' the diamonds set, and a larger stone wouldn''t be able to work without replacing the prongs again. Good luck, and I hope everything turns out!!! I''ve heard great things about the other websites listed above as well. So shop around, and have fun!!!!

Thanks so much, you really are so helpful.....indeed, I think you are totally right about messing with the Tiff&co setting - I will probably have my jeweller here in the UK ''copy'' it as I think this will be easier than shipping to US etc, although I certainly agree that the websites and designers mentioned do make a fantastic replica of the original. x
