Hi everyone,

Not sure if I''m posting this in the right forum section...

I plan to propose to my girlfriend in the next few weeks. We''ve been together seven years and, thinking it''s maybe hard to find romance after all that time, I want to buy her the ring of her dreams. I know that she loves the Tiffany Legacy and I would like to try and get her one of these.

I''ve been looking on the Tiffany website and, out of all their styles, the Legacy is coming out as my favourite too. The only problem is that I have a lot of student debts and I''m not sure how much my money will be able to buy. My budget is roughly around $4,000-$6,000 at a very big stretch. Does anyone know what that might be able to afford? I''m thinking that because the centre stone is surrounded by smaller ones, I might be able to buy a smaller size and have it still look considerable? Does anyone have any pictures to share of different sizes?

Also, does anyone know how the Tiffany sales experience is? Do they offer any perks or advantages over other stores? I know about their lifetime guarantee, but is there anything else to justify their pricing?

ANY help is so welcome because this is quite daunting!!

Hello!

What I really think you should do is go into the store and look at the rings in your hand rather than the website. Sometimes the photos on the website don't do the setting justice. Like the .50ct setting on their website doesn't look nearly as nice as it does in person.

You could probably get a .75ish ct. stone with your budget. Which would still look rather large. I'm sure she would love it.

Besides the lifetime guarantee, they offer excellent customer service, you can upgrade in the future (but you would have to ask about details from the sales associate) and another thing to keep in mind, they have a no-interest payment plan for 12 months. I believe you have to put so much down and then make payments after that.

But if you are planning this in the next few weeks, I would surely make it into the store asap. They can check their database for the setting you want in a size you would like close to your budget and have them shipped in from other stores. If you give them the date you want to propose by, they might be able to rush the process in getting you the right ring and possibly resizing if needed.

Good luck!

(BTW, I think it's sweet of you to do this after 7 years together. I myself am a dream of a Tiffany ring and have been with my boyfriend for over 10 years. My hopes are to get my dream ring one day too!)

LE, congrats on planning to propose! Now what is more important for you and your gf? Do you really want to purchase a Tiffany Legacy (with a smaller center stone and the Tiffany name), or a replica that has a larger stone? This is of course a personal question and it's up to you. If it was me, I'd go for the larger stone. But if you're dead set on a Tiffany...then by all means get a Tiffany.

Here's a link to another PSer who purchased a Tiffany replica and got a bigger stone for close to your budget.

You can get about a third of a carat with that budget (at least you could 2 years ago when I got engaged) at Tiffany's. Unless she has said the Tiffany Legacy is the one she wants, period-I would look elsewhere and find something similar because you can get MUCH more for your money. There are no real benefits to buying from Tiffany's except maybe that they'll offer you champagne when you buy it. Unless she has specifically said that she wants a ring from Tiff's you'll do much better elsewhere.

I would call Mark at Engagement Rings Direct and tell him you want a cushion in the Vatche Princess Grace setting. It won't be exactly the same-but you likely will be able to afford a diamond more in the .75-.9 range and the quality will be fantastic as well. It will look MUCH more substantial. Mark is wonderful to deal with and he will be able to make you a gorgeous ring. Jon at Good Old Gold is also fabulous for cushions-but I am not sure if they sell Vatche or not.

But of course that only goes if the Tiffany is not exactly what she wants and just likes the style of the legacy. If she said she only wants a Tiffany legacy then get her what she wants.

Other vendors have MUCH better upgrade policies than Tiffany''s. Tiff''s lets you do it once, and you have to spend double what you originally spent.

Also, there is no way in heck you can get a .75 legacy at Tiffany''s for $6,000. Even the .5 carat legacies start at $6,700 according to their website.

Thanks Dreamgirl.

If anything, I think I''ve taken too long to propose! It''s been playing more and more on my mind over the last two years, but my girlfriend and I have been putting ourselves through school and starting careers so everything seems to have gotten in the way.

So the legacy in a 0.5 looks nice? That''s interesting to learn because I''ve been worrying that anything under 1 carat will look small.

I''m sure that your Tiffany ring will come one day soon. And it will be worth the wait...

If she loves the Legacy and you want to get her one, don't waste time trying to find something similar. After 7 years together, she should get the ring of her dreams...not the ring that you can get a better deal on. Unless that part isn't important to her that is.

(This is coming from someone who wants a Tiffany)

Your welcome!

I know what you mean. My boyfriend and I needed to finish school and get careers going. But unfortunately for him he was laid off last April and is still looking. Once everything falls into place and our time comes, he will take the next step (as you are!) Besides, after 7 years...you know you want to spend the rest of your life with this person, it was worth the wait! Right?!

I think it looks nice. If you go to the store, have the SA put some on her hand to show you. They face up rather well. I'm sure you could get something over .50ct....Just say you would like to get something as large as possible within your budget.

And thanks for the kind words. One can only dream!

It does look nice in that size-but you cannot afford even a .5 within your budget FYI. Pricing is on the website.

Thanks Luckyeshe.

I''ve been mulling over this whole issue for a while now. My head kind of tells me that it would be great to buy her as large a diamond as possible - even if that means that it doesn''t come from Tiffany. But then I think about how special I want this to be, particularly because we have been together so long, and because I know that she loves the Tiffany Legacy like crazy. I just want to make her happy.

If it helps at all...since I've joined Pricescope I myself have wondered if it would be worth telling my boyfriend to get me something else. But I just keep coming back to Tiffany. It's what I've loved for so long. I've looked at other rings elsewhere but to me, nothing compares to the few styles my boyfriend and I love so much from Tiffany. Sure, I can get a replica Tiffany Setting but to me, I'd just rather have the real thing. When it really comes down to it, I'd rather have a smaller Tiffany than a large something else. (even if he could afford something WELL over 1ct, we wouldn't want a stone much larger than that anyway. But that's just us.)

It varies with each person. Some people would just rather get a larger stone elsewhere. It all depends on what your gut is telling you and how important it is to you and her.

I''m sorry to hear about your boyfriend''s work situation, Dreamgirl. This whole economic situation is so difficult right now but I''m sure he''ll find something in time. My girlfriend and I were both without work for a while last year after leaving education and it''s hard. I think that it''s good to see that you are making it through together - in the good and bad times. That''s what will make you close and make sure that, when your Tiffany ring does come along, you''ve built an amazing union with your partner which will last and last.

Then that answers your question, LE. Tiffany all the way it is for you! (Unless you ask her a few quick question to see if she'd prefer a bigger diamond in your budget). I am just concerned as NF says that it may be a bit over budget. Here's another though...is it possible to go and get her a replica for now and upgrade her and give her the Tiffany of her dreams at an anniversary when you can afford $15K+ on a Tiffany? I was really budget conscious when my FI was looking, so I'm just looking out for your pocket.

My other concern to is to make sure you could purchase something without using credit because you never know what would happen jobwise.

Luckyeshe, it''s important that I buy the ring outright and not on credit. Like you say, there are no guarantees about the future and jobs, so I want to make sure this is something my finances can assume comfortably. I don''t think there''s much use in starting out our life as an engaged couple with even more debt than we already have from our studying.

Thank you! That''s very kind. Man, it sure is tough isn''t it? Glad things are good for you now and you can move forward with your future!

That''s a good idea but would it give it away to her that you are ''up to something'' ??

Not if you get one of her gfs to ask the question! Or maybe a sibling!

The Lucida .50 is $3,400, the Legacy .50 is $6,700.
And don't forget you have to pay taxes. If you're in FL (which is where I am), then you're looking at 7% tax which makes total cost including taxes for Tifany Lucida .50 carat = $7169.

Can you get into Tiffany''s? That''s the best place to start to see how you feel about what you can get for your budget.

The Tiffany website quotes 0.3ct starting at $4,530 for the Legacy. The 0.5ct is $6,700. Legacy

The majority of the cost is in the setting and the brand.

No...I don''t think you are looking at the right ring. The legacy starts at $6,700 for .5 carat.

I just want him to understand that he''s looking at a .33. That is a SMALL ring for $7k.

OP-Can you ask her what she''d prefer? If she''d prefer the legacy even if it''s small then by all means get her that. But she might prefer something else when she sees she can get a very similar ring but much bigger for the same price.

I just posted in your RT thread, but noticed this one is much more heavily traveled:

While I would often suggest looking into a cushion plus a Legacy replica because you can potentially get much more bang for the buck, I think it's important to note that the Legacy cut is proprietary, and is a really more of a mixed step cut cushion crossing the chasm between an asscher and a cushion. The look can't be exactly replicated, but can be attempted with a cushion or an Asscher.

So, if your GF LOVES the Legacy, do you know if it's the unique cut of the Legacy diamond, the setting, or the combination of the two that she swoons over?

If it's the diamond cut, well, I'm afraid you're on the hook for the real deal.

But, if it's just the setting, there are plenty of lovely "inspired" settings out there that might work, like the ERD and the Whiteflash Isabella.

Another compromise would be to get her a Tiffany ring like the (Lucida which I somehow mistakenly thought I read you were looking at
20.gif
lol hey, it's Monday people!) or the Tiffany Setting, or Princess Cut with the Legacy wedding band. This way she would still have the bling of the Legacy if it's Tiffany she really wants. However, that would be a conversation you'd probably have to have with her which might throw your proposal plans for a loop. (As it seems you don't have much time)

But then if she really just wants the Legacy, I'd go to the store and see what the options would really be. It's possible you could still get around or close to .50ct. It all depends on what they have within your budget. But really, the website is $700 over your budget. So it's pretty close...

I wouldn't worry too much at this moment. Go to the store first and see what they've got first then take it from there.

Hi Legal Eagle!

I have a Tiffany engagement ring and while I love it, I agree with others that you should check with your girlfriend about the importance of the name. I have seen some very lovely Legacy replicas on this forum! As some others have pointed out - while the Tiffany no-interest payment plan exists, it''s best to pay for the ring in full outright. With the economic climate being how it is, you especially don''t want to have to finance a ring! To be honest, 0.3 cts is small, even for a Legacy which has a halo. I am positive you can get a much bigger stone with an equally lovely setting from a different vendor. As everyone as said, find a way to get the info about preference from her.

Good luck! It is an exciting time!

Would she be open to the Legacy ring in a colored gemstone? I believe you can get it set with an aquamarine or other colored stones for much less and in larger sizes. Then maybe you can have it reset with a diamond at a later date? Just a thought.

Does she like the look of the proprietary cut (combination step/cushion cut), the setting, the name, or the combination? Your answer there will give you a guide to which direction you should go.

Check estate jewelers in your area. My favourite estate jeweler has a Tiffany Ornate egacy in their case right now, and many estate jewelers will have a Tiffany's section.
