I''m a first time poster, but have been lurking for a while and doing research on buying an engagement ring for my girlfriend.

I don''t know if this is enough info (sorry no pictures), but any thoughts on this diamond:

Diamond
0.83 ct Princess cut, E, VS2, GIA

Depth 74.5%, Table 71%, Girdle Med-Thick, Polish Good, Symmetry Good

Setting
- 2 round side stones, 0.13 each (0.26 tcw), G, SI2
- handful more smaller stones along edge and on the prongs, 0.37 tcw

Overall
- 1.46 tcw
- Total cost $3698 offer before tax (I negotiated a little)

Not close in color and clarity, but ideal specs and a good price. What metal is the setting?

so the price looks about right! I can''t help you analyze the cut b/c I don''t know enough about princesses, but I do know that the cut is the most important factor in determining whether your diamond will sparkle or be a dud. Maybe read the Fancy Shapes section under the Knowledge menu if you are interested in cut.

I''m also searching all over the big internet companies to find comparable diamonds to see if I''m paying an appropriate amount. I am tempted to find a rock with a little bit better proportions (maybe a table < 70%), better polish/symmetry, but I know it''ll bump up the price more.

This is definitely a tough purchase to make!

Welcome to Pricescope.

It is cut which is the most important factor for a diamond's beauty, have you seen this diamond in person? You could drop the colour and clarity and still have a white and clean diamond, that way you could have more budget to work with. Is this diamond GIA graded or another lab? Also are you buying online? If you are and this diamond is online and you want to buy it, ask them if they have any ASET images to help judge light return, if not, then see if they can send you photos of the diamond, so you can get an idea of how it looks. It is hard to judge cut by depth and table, numbers don't tell much of the story, but will give you a guide, so I will post a chart to give you a baseline.

The diamond is GIA cert.

I have seen the diamond (not online, buying from jeweler) and think it's great (but not perfect). I believe my girlfriend would be very happy with it and think it 's beautiful.

I don't know if this jeweler offers ASET/idealscope. I will ask.

Per the princess cut chart, I believe this diamond falls between class 2A and 1B.

My only hesitation (and maybe it's just that I need to voice them) is that by the numbers, it's not a "perfect" stone (table not less than 70. . .is it that important?, polish/symmetry not ideal, etc). But, I think it'll be okay since it fits my budget.

Any other thoughts are more than welcome!

As you have seen this diamond, that is the most important thing, if you love it. I wouldn''t worry too much about the numbers, fancy shapes can often not match up to suggested numbers and still be lovely diamonds, the numbers are a guide, but don''t tell the whole story. An ASET image would be very useful if your vendor can get one, but also I would say if you can, to get out and look at some other Princess cuts if you aren''t sure, to see what you like and prefer, before pulling the trigger, but as you say, you think it is beautiful then that is the main thing. One thing I would suggest, is to try and look at this diamond away from the jewellery store lights, check it out in daylight to see how it performs. It won''t sparkle like crazy in all lights, as if the light isn''t conducive to sparkle, diamonds can go into '' rest mode'', but even so, should still look attractive if not sparkling like mad! See if your jeweller will let you do this before purchase, but above all get what you think is a beautiful diamond for your GF!!
