Hi Everyone!

I''ve been reading posts for sometime now and cannot emphasize how informative and helpful everyone here is. I’ve learned so much over the last several weeks, which has made this task of looking for the “perfect stone” less daunting! I’m so surprised to see how respectful is of everyone…I feel so lucky to have come across this site.

I’ve had my heart set on a Round Brilliant for sometime now. While recently browsing on engagementringsdirect.com, I came across a stone, went to the GIA website and pulled up the report from the Certificate Number that was provided by ERD. Here are the specs:

Measurement: 7.72-7.76 x 4.81m
Carat Weight: 1.79
Color: J
Clarity: VS2
Cut: Excellent
Depth: 62.1%
Table: 57%
Crown Height: 15%
Pavillion Depth: 43%
Cutlet: None
Price: $10,190.00

I ran the numbers on the Cut Advisor link I found and it came back as “1.3-Excellent”. I think this stone, based on the numbers, seem great. The only "concern" is that my BF has an issue with it being a J color.

Do you think I should give up the size and go with something smaller in at least an I? So many of you are so willing to offer your advice so I thought I would give it a shot.

Thanks in advance!!

Welcome to PS, Sparkler!

Have you seen a J color in person? Most of the J''s I''ve seen (and have) face up very white and what little warmth they have doesn''t bother me at all. I might be a little hesitant though to put a J in a semi-mount in case the side diamonds were MUCH whiter and made the center stone look dingy. So, my advice, look at a J IRL first, but I think that stone would be fantastic!

Hi Somethingshiny! You make a great point. I never considered how it may look in a semi-mount. I just assumed it would be fine...Thanks for making me aware of this.

Hi Sparkler,

Can you get the crown and pavilion measurements in angles please? They are said to be more accurate than percents. Girdle thickness would be good too and if the diamond has any blue fluorescence.

The crown angle is 35 and the pavillion angle is 40.8. No fluorescense and the girdle is thin to slightly thick, faceted.

Thanks! Ok looks fine from the info given, I would do as SS says also, look at some J's in person. A well cut J will still look white, you may see a teensy tint from the side, but there are many delighted J owners here! I would grab a J in a heartbeat to get a bigger diamond, but it depends on you and your colour perception. When comparing J's try to make sure the diamonds are the same shape, similar size, lab grade and cut quality to make sure you are comparing apples to apples so to speak.
