Hi all,

As you know, I have been on the major hunt for a good looking Radiant at a price I can afford, in time for 4th of July proposal. The first two I put on here got torn apart and everyone said they were no good. This new one comes via my dad's friend who owns a very reputable brick and mortar shop. I am attaching the GIA cert to this thread, as well as a picture of the stone (although the photo is not high def.) Please have a look and let me know what you think. Many thanks!

Do you have an aset image? There is a lot of glare on the
Stone so I can't really tell much about it.

Sorry TyTy, I do not have an ASET on it. What are your thoughts on the inclusions? You think they will be noticeable to the naked eye, based on what you are seeing on the GIA Cert?

Do the bigger circles in the middle left of the stone (on the GIA cert) mean they are larger crystals? Do you think they are visible to the naked eye?

Really I think it is hard to tell by your photo. Did you like it in person?? It doesn't look to have a dead spot or bow tie. Sometime that can happen. Did you look at it in different lighting? Did you take it outside into natural lighting? Those Jewelry store lights can make almost any stone look pretty.

It looks a lot like my stone and almost has the same specs.
I think it looks pretty but I might be bias

Need an ASET.

If you are going to persist in shopping at "friend" jewelers (which is a very bad idea) and in person you need to have the right tools and education.

Buy this: http://www.ideal-scope.com/cart_zoom_item.asp?Id=21&ShowAdd=Y It's a good investment of under 100 dollars on a very expensive purchase. And when you are done we have a board you can resell it on, and it will sell quickly.
And learn to read what it shows you: http://www.ideal-scope.com/cart_zoom_item.asp?Id=21&ShowAdd=Y

Red is good. Green is less good. White is bad (assuming the background is white). Blue is good if it is for patterning and contrast, bad if it is showing where there there should be green or red.

Radiant ASETs.

WHITE Background
1. Great.
2. Very good.
3. Average
4. Bad

(couldn't find a truly bad one to post, so I posted two excellent ones)

Hi Ross,

I am sorry this is proving so difficult for you, unfortunately, radiants can be tricky and that you have such tight time constraints is adding to the pressure. I can't get any meaningful info from the photo posted unfortunately, it would be helpful if you could get some more photos of the stone out of the box but I highly recommend Gypsy's suggestion to help you, buy an ASET scope and take it with you to view stones as a supplement to your own eyes if you prefer to stick to jewellery stores.

Looking at the images to try to get some info for you, I don't think the trilliants are a good match, both look dead and one is showing what appears to be considerable areas of leakage, the other is pure crushed ice and I also have concerns with your centre stone that it isn't well cut and going to be a beautiful diamond. I am sorry we aren't being more helpful to you and having more positive opinions but radiants are one of the most difficult to find well cut examples....Are you open to buying online and if so, what is your budget for the stone and setting? Maybe we could help you find some alternatives?

Does the proposal have to be on 4th July? I appreciate it is a 'special' day and all that, but romance should not be bound by a calendar ;)

That would then take the pressure off getting a stone NOW and risking making a terrible mistake.

IMO, of course.

Thanks Gypsy! I'll look into the ASET. But why did you say it's a bad idea to work with a friend jeweler? If it's someone we trust and who will guarantee the product or my money back, what is the harm in that?

Ive been on these boards since 2005.
I have seen posters every week try to use friend or family jewelers.

And in all that time I've seen exactly ONE transaction go well and the buyer truly get a good deal.

Most of the time their trust gets abused and their friend is looking to use that "trust" sell them some dud in their inventory that they can't otherwise move, or that's otherwise problematic.

And on top of that we've had friend jewelers tell people to ignore bad certificates (EGL, etc), we've had friend jewelers tell people that ASET scopes and Idealscopes are irrelevant or crappy, we've had friend jewelers tell people that they should not buy online for every reason under the sun ( "you thdon't know what they'll send you", "online jewelers only sell inferior goods that no one else will sell") you name it, they'll tell every lie you can think of to dissuade their 'friends' from getting a stone somewhere they CANNOT compete with.

I really mean that. In 9 years on the boards... EVERY SINGLE person who has tried to use a friend jeweler (except one) has been offered dodgy or inferior goods, or very high prices or some other problematic transactions, or they've been lied to.

They do not work out.

And no, you will not be the exception.

HI Ross,
Here's my take on it.
There's many different style of radiant cuts.
The cut was invented with a facet pattern that produced a lot of smaller sparkles, as opposed to fewer, yet larger reflections.
A round brilliant is like the second style.
Henry Grossbard, patented the cut, more like the first type of sparkle called The Original Radiant Cut.
The design is basically "open source" and others have come up with many variants.
To oversimplify, some of these variants graft the facet pattern of a round on to a cut cornered rectangular or square shape.
This gives the look of less, yet larger reflections of light coming back to the eye.

Which is right for you?
Comes down to personal taste.
I don't believe anyone can answer what your taste is but you.
When I'm trying to figure out what a person wants I ask them questions.
One big question is the ring- you've chosen trilliants- a very nice look with a rectangular radiant.
Personally, if I'm setting a three stone ring with trills, I prefer the look of more smaller flashes, as opposed to larger less flashes.
it seems to go better with trills.

Another suggestion is to try to see stones first hand.
That way you can see for yourself.
In an ideal situation you'd be able to compare- but that may not be possible.
ASET seems to be a great equalizer in that regard- and it does provide valuable info- but if you don;t know how to correlate the images to what you love in real life, ASET will not really help.
Some very beautiful radiants have a lot of green in the aset for example- and not always in symmetrical patterns.
The larger type of flashes are indeed brighter- which ASET shows red which is why some people say red is better.
BUT that single aspect does not always translate into which is the best cut, or more important, best for you.

Try and look at many places if possible.
Speak to a lot of people if you can.
That may help you put all the things coming at you into better context.

Best of luck and congratulations!

I finally got an ASET image done on the Radiant out of Colorado. Please see image below and let me know if this is good or bad or what this ASET is telling me. Many thanks!
