Thoughts on this old euro…

Hey all,

I’m considering this old euro, J, I-1 1ct. I was wondering what your thoughts on it are where it’s an I-1? What do you see that gives it that clarity grade? Is the centre too dark? I don’t have a lot more info on the stone. I’ll put the picture I have below.

As an aside, I’m new here. I have an opportunity to purchase a ring or two. Really it’s kind of a once in a life time thing for me. In my quest to learn more about diamonds and make an educated purchase, I stumbled upon this forum, and wow! So much info and as I’ve been reading through some threads so much kindness too. I’d like to find an old mine cut ring, I’d consider an old euro too….hence my question. Thanks for your time. IMG_1844.jpeg

This looks to me like an old mine cut diamond, not an old European cut. Color looks warmer than J. I’m guessing M or lower. It’s much more than 100 years old as this cut preceded OECs.

If the ring is a good price AND returnable, I’d send for it to look at it in person.

I am tolerant of inclusions, the I1 designation could mean that there is a crack/chip or inclusions hard to tell until you Look at it. Buy a loupe. Examine carefully in person.

This is a coveted old mine cut with koizibe. I personally love those cuts. It’s worth considering. IMO

Agree with everything @LightBright said! I have a few similar cuts that an appraiser called I1 because of the typical wear these diamonds show around the girdle.

Thank you for your insights. I was not expecting that to be honest. I almost took it off the list completely. I’m not afraid of some inclusions, depends of what/where they are. Honestly, the wonkiness and slight imperfections of old mines is a plus for me. And hand cut….sigh…also super cool. I’m not a fan of “cookie cutter” things. And koizibe…..that’s on my wish list. I thought I was seeing some in there, but then I second guessed myself. This is better than I thought. The con for me is that I really don’t like the setting. They said if I don’t like the setting I could choose one from their catalogue which I believe is Stuller settings. I didn’t find any I liked because I’m just kinda wanting an antique setting.

I will ask about the return policy. Cost is around $2000 USD. Would you consider that good, or just meh? And I will buy a loupe, I wondered if that was going to be something I needed to do.

Price is high given the true color and admitted clarity.

I'd buy this instead, which I am obsessed with. 1.01 ct L VS2 (GIA), trusted seller and perfect cut:

And pop it in this setting (its original antique, never set before):

Here's some other options from another great seller. They usually accept offers 20% below asking.

This one is basically perfection:

Or this lovely two stone, each is .70ct, gorgeous antique mounting.

Oh I will look through these tonight. They’re all gorgeous! Thank you for sharing.

Yeah, that L is great for the price!! It's been on my watch list for a while.

Lovely! Well priced.

I took some time to think on the options you guys shared. I’m not going to go for the Diamond I shared initially. And even thought the loose stone you shared is amazing, buying it and having it set feels like jumping into the deep end of something I know nothing about. I also don't know of a place near me that would do that well. So I’m not going to do that. I liked the ring in the second link that Dreamer shared but, it didn’t make my heart sing. So I’m back to ebay searches. I was kinda hoping to buy in Canada to avoid the exchange but I’m not having success with that. lol I’m beginning to sound quite picky.

Now for my lurking confession….. I found a link the ‘Somebody’s got to buy this’ thread that is closer to what I like. I’ll put it below. What are your thoughts on this one? I’m not sure that it’s an old mine cut and I would like to find one of those. I do love love love the setting though.

I think it's lovely, both the stone and the setting. And the price feels reasonable to me. I wish the photos of the stone were a little better, and they gave more details about the stone itself. If I were you, I would ask for more/better stone photos. I would also assume the center to be a K or lower.

I’ve purchased from this seller and was very happy with my purchase. Just note the stone was more warm than their description, which is common with old euros.

That vendor has a standalone store. I actually contacted them for videos on this ring. I would recommend that you do the same. They were very friendly and sent videos directly to me. Plus, if you’re able to buy direct, you might save a little bit of money since eBay charges the vendor fees. But I personally think that’s an amazing price and I’m surprised that it hasn’t sold already.

I loved the ring, but I didn’t buy it because I need this stone like I need a hole in the head.

ETA - it is definitely not an old mine.

Thank you for confirming it’s not an old mine. And for insight on the seller.

I’m unsure of how I feel about how much warmth I’d be okay with in a diamond. I can see warmth in the photos they have in the listing. Where I live there is no where I could go to see old ones in person. Will pictures and videos give me an accurate enough idea?

I can see it in the second and third photos. Not as much in the first. Maybe I’d be okay with it. That warrants some thought. Thank you for sharing those photos. That’s very gracious of you.

I bet it’s gorgeous irl. My camera often captures tint that isn’t discernible to my naked eye.

Yeah I think that’s an MN.

Why are you opposed to warmth? Antiques tend to me L to OP.

I have a 6.7mm beautiful OEC located in Vancouver saved but it would need a new setting. Let me know if you want me to post it. It is warm like all antique stones.

I’ve been pondering that…..I’m not opposed to warmth. I know from reading that the old cuts are warmer. I guess what I’m trying to ascertain is how warm is too warm for me. And I wonder if it’s possible for me to figure that out via photos/videos only. I like the stone in that ring I linked above. I see the warmth in it and I think I’d be okay with that. But on the flip side, if I purchase it and it’s even warmer than that in person, will I like it enough? There’s that risk with anything I suppose. My inexperience is showing. I am reading (found your thread on old cuts…..thanks for sharing all that info) and learning and hoping that I can learn enough to make a decent choice. I have no timeline to make a purchase, so lots of time to learn and figure out what I like and don’t like.

I would like to see your OEC.

I think you should definitely visit an antique store in person and try on some old cuts and see!

For what it's worth - I have an old euro that looks very warm on camera but not warm at all on my finger! I think that's the tendency

I really would love to do that. However, I’m in a very rural province with no selection that I have found so far. I am still searching, crossing my fingers that I will find something to at least give me a baseline.

Yeah you can’t judge color from photos unfortunately. Do you have any trips to the big city planned?

It sounds like you are not a diamond person (yet). My experience wearing L color old cuts is not one single person ever has any comments at all about the color. I think it’s a non issue especially in Canada where I feel like most people don’t know squat about diamonds anyway.

I'm hearing loud and clear that colour doesn’t matter, or shouldn’t matter. And you’re right, perhaps I’m not a Diamond person… yet. I know that there is so much I don’t know, I’m trying to learn. I’m not worried about what other people think. I just want to be happy with what I choose where I must purchase online. That’s all. I guess that means learning more and being willing to take a risk on something that I cannot see in person before I buy.

Lots of people care about color. I just think when a person also wants a true antique and a deal and to maximize size, something has to give. And color for me just easily falls of the list of things to care about.
