I am considering this gem. I have been asked to pay $1600.
It is GIA certified & laser inscribed.
HCA gives it 0.6.

I have not seen it live yet. It is a private transaction (hence the price being ~25% below retail).

Any thoughts?

might have obstruction issue.

It is on the shallow side and might show obstruction when viewed closely. This is where the diamond visibly darkens at close scrutiny due to the viewer's head or body blocking the light to the diamond. I would definitely get an independant appraiser involved if you want to pursue this diamond.

To give you an idea on pricing, similar are selling online anywhere between $2k - $2400 with a quick search, it is usual for a private seller to expect only 30 - 50% of what they originally paid when reselling so definitely proceed with caution and involve an appraiser to make sure the price you pay is fair. Is this just for the diamond or does it include a setting and if so, what type of setting?

It is set in a platinum ring with some side diamonds.
Setting is probbaly something I can sell for $100+

But I appreciate your thoughts about watching out for shallowness.

in fact, you point to my dilemna when buying privately - the benefit of an appraiser. I would love to pay a nominal fee for someone to give me a go/no-go type of review but appraisers seem to want alot more than a nominal fee.

Appraisers are highly skilled individuals as you know, personally I would not want to undertake such a purchase without an appraiser being involved - too risky for me. What you could do is talk to an appraiser and maybe have an inspection tailored to your requirements, for example maybe not a full appraisal but just a verification that it is in fact a diamond, that the report matches etc and their opinion on pricing.
