Ok...after waffling for a long time, I had a new platinum setting made. I like it a lot. But I am still nervous and unsure about the reset! Gah! I love the 8-thinner-prong orientation. I like the hearts and circles. The band is a tiny bit wider than the current one, but it's comfortable on my finger. So...should I go through with it???

Back story: my diamond has a vintage feel (I think it is an early brilliant) and it reflects the colors around it (it takes on the colors of the walls or ceiling). The setting it's in bothers me because it is modern, with very white melee, and I also don't like the huge prongs. I have gotten used to the ring, though, and I don't always mind it. I hate that I am still waffling. Argggghh!

I love the finer prongs, I think they'll accentuate your centre stone beautifully.

I think it is very pretty. And to clarify your current ring looks nice too.

How will you know if you like it or not if you don't see it in the new setting? I mean, if you don' t like it as much as your current setting you can always move it back right? I'm willing to bet you will love it in the new setting, it's beautiful! :appl:

The setting's already made... might as well do it.

Is it impossible to thin out the prongs of the current setting? That's really the only thing that sticks out about it, but I'm not sure how noticeable it is IRL.

No. I had them sanded down, but they can't be thinned. They could be turned into claws, but they would still be enormous at the edges, because they come straight out of pave. It is noticeable. But the orientation (East-West) of the prongs bothers me, too.

As of now, I am planning to reset. But I'm nervous about it. What if something goes wrong?! Hmph.

Are you worried about something in particular going wrong? There is a degree of anxiety with a reset to be sure. Usually it is uncertainty about the setting turning out the way you want it, but your setting is lovely. I can't wait to see it with your beautiful stone. :wavey:

As you know I am a fan of your current setting.
However, you were having doubts from the start and this new setting will showcase your stone beautifully and there will be no contrast with any melee to bother you. So, that's why I voted for the reset, especially since the new setting is already made.

Good luck with making your decision. To my eyes it's a low risk decision since you can still go back to your current setting. I am sure you will love the new art deco setting. A good jeweller will not damage your stone during the reset and you can request to leave the old setting intact.

I love the new setting, and am a sucker for 8 prong vintage settings. Do you mind sharing who made it?

I love your new vintage setting. I think the new setting will be better since there is no melee contrast. Can you ask the setter to unset from your current one carefully so that the prongs are preserved and you can reset back into old setting if the new one doesn't work out?

I really like the new setting, I say go for it!

I have an 8 prong myself and I like it, but it depends if you will miss the extra bling on the sides or not. Having said that if the colour difference between the sides and the centre stone bugs you then this will solve that problem.... Your stone has more of a transitional look about it so I think it will look fine in either setting.

I am nervous about anything getting damaged during a reset. I am going to someone who sets stones (well) every day, so he'll be very good at it, and I will ask him to be gentle with the old setting.

The process of having the new ring made was frustrating. A million mistakes went into the CAD, and I had to give up on some pretty lines on the side because they just didn't seem right. The band came out thicker than I had envisioned. I wanted to do this through OWD, but I never got a response. The ring came out fine, though, and I *think* I will be happier with it than I am with the current setting.

By the way, this was the inspiration ring:

I like your old setting - a lot - however I voted for the new one. I think the thinner prongs and plain shank will better accentuate and showcase that beautiful stone!

I love the new setting but as you know I have something similar and that's what I love. Simple, classic and let the diamond be the star.

I have looked at pictures of your ring about a million times. And you convinced me to stick with neutral platinum. :)

Here's how I've been wearing it lately. The milgrain in the curved band somehow antiques the look just enough for me to like it, thus the second (billionth) thoughts.

I just spent some time with the new setting and I am excited about the reset again. It's the right thing (for me) to do. I am often distracted by the setting and I want my diamond to shine. Thank you all for your input! :)

I think you will love it to add some art deco flair. And you can combine it with your curved blingy band to add some shine whenever you feel like it. You will love the 8 delicate prongs. It's such a balanced look. On the photo's the shank looks really delicate; the tiny bit of extra width balances very well with your giant stone.

As long as you discuss with the jeweller to remove the stone gently and to keep the setting intact, you can always go back.
It's really good that you put so much thought into this since this is your signature ring. I have the feeling you are gearing towards a bit of vintage flair, so I think the art deco setting is really something for you.

I like your current setting, however I voted for the new one. I think the thinner prongs will be more flattering to your big 'ole rock! :naughty: Also, plain metal makes the diamond stand out more IMO.

I love the new setting - it is similar to the one I wanted for my cushion originally. The old setting is pretty too but the new one is stately and beautiful.

Your setting reminds me of Arkieb1's gorgeous art deco setting. Her stone is a 5 carat diamond as well.

No wonder you are confused you have two beautiful settings. Your stone is gorgeous. I voted for the reset. I love the prongs and the setting. I also love the current setting. I hate to bring this up but is it just the prongs you don't like about the current setting? Will you miss the bling on the band? The new setting will make your stone center stage. To help reduce your stress level tell yourself you really can't go wrong and can always change it back if your not happy. It seems like you'll constantly wonder if you would be happier with the new setting if you don't make the change. I feel bad for you because I know how you're feeling. You just want to be 100 percent in love with the finished ring. I'm sorry I'm kind of all over the place with this post. I'm stressing for you now.

I love this place. I've finally found people who obsess and stress about the details of their jewelry like I do! My RLF look at me like I've lost my mind when I stress about this kind of stuff.

I love the quiet confidence of a simple solitaire propping up a massive diamond.

Thanks, everyone! Callie, I don't like the prongs or the modern feel, or the whiteness of the melee in contrast with my L color center stone. It shows only in certain lighting, but it bothers me. I am going to do the reset later this week!

Acinom, yes, I like Arkieb1's ring, but I wanted the prongs to be in a different orientation (N-S-E-W and in between, rather than rotated from that), and, though I chatted with Victor about a setting, he didn't want any input and didn't even answer the question of whether I could dictate the prong orientation, so I went with someone else.

Teodbl, my husband wanted me to go with a solitaire from the beginning, but I thought I wanted it to be blingy. I've come around. :)

I don't think of my new setting as art deco. I think of it as older than that - like Edwardian, but without melee. I think of art deco as having more triangles, squares and other geometric shapes, whereas this one has hearts and circles.

I hope it goes well!!!

Tourmaline, Please post pictures of your diamond once it's been set in the new setting. I think you'll be so happy with your decision.

I voted no because I'm not a fan of the reset setting. Hope it works out for you either way - I know how stressful it can be (I've done a reset fairly recently) :))

Thank you for your honesty. When we first started the process of a 10-year-ring, I thought I wanted a modern halo and a high color center stone, but my search took me elsewhere, and I find that the bright pave in my current setting just seems kind of cheesy and cold to me. I do like the reset ring, even if there are a couple of details that I would have liked to have been slightly different. It IS helpful to hear others' opinions. It helps me to figure out my own more clearly. :)

I really love the new setting, but honestly, I would prefer it with an OEC. I just have this thing that I like antique cut stones in antique style settings and modern round brilliants in either classic or modern settings. That said, my setting is the classic Tiffany solitaire because I started with a mrb and then changed to an AVR and can't find a setting I really love enough to change to! So I feel your dilemma!

The new setting is gorgeous, please please do the reset!!
