I think the real decision is not whether the halo is too much or not -- it is beautiful -- but what style of ring you like! A solitaire highlights the diamond, and the ring is really secondary. With a halo, the entire ring is the center of attention, the ring is as important as the diamond. These are two very different looks, and to be honest, I don''t think that a halo will satisfy DSS in the long term. It will give you a finger of bling look, but the diamond is still the same size, KWIM? My MIL has a setting that is very detailed and ornate like that, and it is lovely, but her diamond doesn''t look any larger than mine (they are the same size), her *ring* just look fancier.

So I think that the decision should really be about the style of ring you like. I love a halo in many many ways, and often think about getting one, but I know that in the end I want a big diamond, not just a big ring. So for now I am sticking with a solitaire.

What style do you lean towards? Do you want to highlight the diamond or have a stunning piece of jewelry with a lovely diamond?

I would go for the halo!! I have a 1.62 ct stone. I realized that upgrading the diamond to 1.75-1.85 ct was not going to give me the look I really wanted. I chose a halo setting with very small diamonds. When the diamond was set, both my DH and I said that the center stone, itself, appeared larger in the halo setting. Overall, the ring--which is my avatar---looks considerably larger. I do not think it looks like a cocktail ring at all. It is just a great engagement ring!! Have fun picking out your new halo

I went to try on halo settings at a jeweler today. They had a 2 carat round in a Simon G halo setting, so I tried that one on to get an idea. It is definitely large, but still looks pretty. I have to think about it a bit more. The Simon G had an airline which I liked, because it showed off the stone more in my opinion.

I also tried on the Tacori 2620 halo and boy was that gorgeous! I would be worried about being able to clean my diamond though because the undergallery is totally closed.

That is exactly why I took my diamond out of my tacori, I could always see little dirt spots when I looked into it, just drove me nuts!

I am pretty sure an ultrasonic cleaner would take care of the undergallery dirt... I think EM also mentioned the close gallery actually keeps her diamond clean by not letting the dirt in!
