I am obviously new and I have a few questions about actually making the purchase. When purchasing a diamond in-store, whether it be from the reputable Diamond District Vendor or reputable jewler elsewhere, should one always get a grading report and appraisal from a third party?

Do most stores give money back guarantees if not satisfied after the report and appraisal?

I should have the stone set after the appraisal...correct?

I would always get a certified stone, i.e. AGS, GIA, or EGL USA. I would also always get it appraised by an independent appraiser. You can find a list of them in your area on the top of this page under "Resources."

Some stores, especially internet sites, give you a time period to return it, i.e. WF gives you ten days I believe, while Blue Nile gives you thirty. But those are online vendors. Many B&M stores will allow you to have the stone sent to an independent appraiser before purchase, and if they are unwilling to do so, then I would look elsewhere.

I would have the loose stone appraised by an independent appraiser before it is set and then have then see it again after it is set. For insurance purposes, you will need an appraisal of a set ring, because most insurers will not insure a loose stone anyways.

Hope this helps!!
