Pandora, our system in Canada is similar in almost every respect. I find the minor inconveniences (like only 2 u/s, maybe just 1) a small price to pay for universal free medical care... but that is another threadDate: 9/3/2008 11:53:12 AM

Maybe it''s different in the US.
Here you only see an OB perhaps twice in the whole pregnancy and a bit more if you have problems - and ''maybe'' at the birth (if you''re high risk you will normally be under a consultant for the birth). Normally it''s just a midwife at the birth and sometimes they are looking after 3 or 4 people at the same time...there''s a doctor on the ward (normally a registrar) in case there are problems but you might never see them.
Do I love the NHS or what...![]()
So, 99% of your pregnancy appointments are with your GP. This is the problem... I guess I should just talk to him when it happens. I''m quite happy to leave modesty at the door with people I don''t feel I know...
Your GP surgery does pap tests etc over here as well (every 3 years), but normally it''s one of the nurses that does it.
In the US it seems like you have a specialist for most things, here it''s mainly your GP who does everything.
Just out of interest, how many scans do you get in the US? We get one at 12 weeks and in some areas another at 20 weeks, but a lot of places it''s just the one.
Sadly going private is unbelievably expensive - it''s about $32k for a normal birth...
