I found this diamond posted at $5,580 with the following specs:

Princess
1.06 ct
D color
VS1 clarity
Cut: Very Good
Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Very Good
Girdle: Thick

From what I''ve read online on these forums, everything seems to be good, minus the girdle. Any thoughts on how important the girdle is? Does it make or break the diamond?

Thanks for any advice.

Hi Korolyuks

This tutorial here on diamond girdles and thickness will be helpful. Girdles are important, but they aren't critical to beauty such as the rest of the diamond proportions so much but they do need careful evaluation just the same. Ideally you want a girdle with little deviation such as thin to slightly thick, thin to medium and so on, it is possible a thick girdle can waste carat weight. A girdle which is very thin can be a potential durability issue, however if the very thin part only measures in the microns and or is not in a vulnerable part of the girdle itself then it could be fine but in these cases it is always best to get a trusted expert to look at the diamond for you.

With the diamond in question, unfortunately we need more info to advise, can you get any images such as ASET and detailed photographs of this diamond please? If the overall cut looks good then the girdle could well be fine but images would tell us much more if you could get them.

I take it the diamond is GIA graded? Can you post the diameter in MM too please and the depth and table percentages? Have you seen the diamond in person or is it available online?

Unforunately, there are no pics available from the website, but here are more specs:

GIA standards
Measurements: 5.65 x 5.6 x 4.11
Table: 74%
Depth: 73.4 %
Girdle: Ex Thin To Thick

Looks like I was wrong about the girdle, origionally.

Thats a shame as there is no way to properly judge the cut without, I would be very careful with the girdle being extremely thin as it could be a potential durability issue as explained above, especially with Princess shapes that have sharp corners.

How about this diamond?

Princess
1.04 ct
E color
vs1
excellent cut
Gia standards
5.58 x 5.38 x 4.03
66% table

It might be ok but without images there is no way to tell really, its very much a gamble without. Which vendors are you looking at? It might be worthwhile checking out the websites of vendors who have the stones in house with all the info readily available.

If you give us an idea of budget for the stone and your requirements, we might be able to suggest some diamonds which might suit you?
