The "Healthy During A Pandemic" Thread!

I’ve started logging my food and weight. I’m trending down but very very slowly. Like a pound down in a month slow, but I’ll take it over gaining weight. If this doesn’t scare you into trying for a healthy weight, little will:

I did a half-assed p90x YogaX workout this AM. Holy F it was hard haha. I dont think I'll be doing it again, 90m of yoga is a bit too much for me.

I'm in three different "Staying Fit during WFH" group chats/challenges, so between the 3 groups, I'm actually toning up and losing flab because I want to participate in all 3.

Group 1 is the 50/50 challenge with my hiking buddies: We do 50 sit-ups, 50 squats, 50 push-ups, 50 Lunges (on each side). We text each other and make sure we do the 50/50 each day.

Group 2 is a Step challenge: This is with a small group of coworkers who all have step trackers, and we aim for 10K steps a day. I usually only get in 3000-7000 steps on any given day because I walk with my teens or hubby, and they don't want to go beyond 2 miles.

Group 3 is a personal trainer-taped workout that the trainers from my company send out each week during this period. We have 4 personal trainers in our company that have been taping daily 20-30 minute workouts. We have a FB group and the trainers keep us accountable.....

HI:

Rode our bikes today--first of the year for me! Cool out and cloudy but rode anyway.

cheers--Sharon

Yay, great thread! I've stopped running outdoors since I simply can't do it while wearing a mask, plus the weather here is warming up which makes it even less appealing! Wearing masks in public isn't actually required in my city, but based on the NextDoor chatter I've seen, local folks get (understandably) nervous if joggers aren't masked.

So these days, I'll either do a HIIT workout (Fitness Blender on Youtube) or I'll run up and down my stairs for 30 minutes. This is usually followed by a light upper body or arm workout using my bodyweight or the only weights I have at home (2 lbs. each).

I suppose one positive to come out of this situation is more regular exercise. Pre-pandemic, I would go running or to the gym 5 or 6 times a week. Now, I exercise daily. Even though I don't actually enjoy working out, it's a part of my daily sanity-saving routine and I feel gross/out-of-sorts if I don't do it. So far, my weight has been stable and I hope to keep it that way.

As for food, I've always tried to minimize sugar, gluten, and dairy. "Tried" being the operative word. I eat just enough of these things to scratch the itch and live a little!

Happy Wednesday kids!

I did end up being better on the food front yesterday! And taking the ice cream downstairs worked -- although I did have a second glass of wine...

This morning I reached down to pick up my socks and realized how tight my muscles are. Forget actual exercise; I think I need to start with some STRETCHING!

Off to an early zoom meeting. 7:44 and only coffee to this point, so I haven't screwed up yet today, LOL!

Dee I think it’s best to warm up gently first ie walking or something similar for 10 minutes and then you can stretch. Good luck with your Zoom meeting.

I wish joggers here were as considerate as you. They run right past us with no warning and no mask. Huffing and puffing. Annoying is an understatement. Enjoy your workouts however you get them accomplished!

Yassss! You’re ahead of us as we are unsure when we’ll be back cycling. Soon I hope. Enjoy!

Happy hump day! Good job on the healthy eating yesterday! One day at a time, right? And I'm with you on the morning optimism...I always think, "Yay me, with the self-control!" Then I have cookies at 10am. :eek-2:

Thanks, Missy! I cannot tell you how many times over the past month a runner has passed within what feels like inches, and I can almost feel their breath. :eek-2: Pedestrians, too...once my daughter and I were strolling down a city sidewalk and a young man who was approaching saw me swerving (literally into the road) to avoid him. He looked directly into my eyes while angling himself to walk aggressively straight AT me as if to say, "I know you're trying to social distance, but eff you!" He passed within 1 foot - there was no way we could avoid him. He was clearly trying to provoke. It's sh!t like this that makes me nervous even to walk outside, let alone go running!

Yeah I’m sorry you are experiencing this too. I was hoping it was confined to nyc since people here can be let’s say difficult thinking they’re invincible. I get upset because they’re hurting everyone with their thoughtless selfish behavior. We truly all need to work together to get through this whole.
Stay safe and be well. Keeping good thoughts for everyone. ❤️

Great idea Dee Jay!

I find I am not stress snacking at home like I do at work so I am trying to take advantage of that. I am limiting my sugar intake and eating sensible meals. I have faithfully done my lifting twice a week.

Onward through the fog . . .

Yesterday I was tempted to eat the last 2 pints of Haagen Dazs so I ate them so I would no longer be tempted.

Today I started back on my 18:6 fasting schedule with the intent being to eat 2 healthy meals in my 6 hr eating window. There isn't any more junk food in the house except for Nutella which I have an easy time ignoring as long as I don't watch the news.

Still doing video workouts and walking but I miss having my butt whipped in the gym by my personal trainer.

I eat healthy pretty much most days during the week, its the weekend where I have issues, I walk 3 miles every day during the week (Sunday thru Thursday) and do house cleaning on the weekends...I gained some weight during the holidays that I am struggling to lose...my issue today is I am getting pretty darned depressed...I never drink at all during the week but I am about to lose that battle today and have a little drink..I am trying to stay busy so that I dont give in...

Haagen Dazs and Hersey bars have been my downfall since the lockdown began. I tried moving the chocolate to the basement. Unfortunately it didn’t deter me. I’m sure the scale will show running up and down the stairs repeatedly doesn’t erase eating a whole bag chocolate.

HI:

Bright sunny day albeit a bit cool. Had a nice long ride.

cheers--Sharon

So far working out is continuing to go well. Elliptical every day with my weight vest and I do weights alternating arms one day and legs the next and Pilates every day. Eating more than usual but it wouldn't be a bad thing for me to gain a bit of weight though as we all know it can easily go from a few lbs to too many lbs. We are walking much less and much less active than usual due to quarantine so that is another reason I think for weight gain. But I am not going to worry about that as long as I am eating healthfully and working out.

I love my Pilates Reformer and will miss it when we head to our beach house.

HI:

Had a decent walk today. Looks like it might rain.

cheers--Sharon

Still exercising for about 50 minutes each day with videos (HIIT or kickboxing, and light weight workouts) because I feel guilty if I don't, haha. BUT, I was weak and had a pint of ice cream at bedtime last night. And the night before. I tried to thwart myself by brushing my teeth right after dinner but that didn't stop me from grabbing a spoon and Strauss' mint chip at 11pm both nights.

My anxiety and boredom in this lockdown situation are making it extra-hard to eat healthfully all the time, so I've decided why fight it!? I'm going to let myself indulge sometimes and not be too hard on myself. Sanity first!

I agree. Mental health is most important now and I think a pint of ice cream every night keeps us mentally sane. At least it does for me. Enjoy your ice cream Kristy. You deserve it and your workouts are excellent!

Just back from a walk! Not a huge one -- only about 2,500 steps -- but that's way more than I've been getting (as sad as that sounds... ). Made "beef stew" for lunch/dinner with lean meat, potatoes, onions, carrots and a gravy packet. As you can tell, I'm no cook, LOL. But at least this won't be a day of only chips and salsa! :cheeky:

Thanks, Missy! Sounds like you're doing great with the exercise as well! I'm jealous that you have home gym equipment! I would kill for an elliptical machine! As for my weakness for ice cream, I take comfort in knowing I'm not alone...just look at the other posts on this page!

Good job! Every step makes a difference. I, too, have had days where all I've eaten is chips and other snack foods.

Thanks Kristy! I'm just not a gym person (very shy in that kind of a situation) so all my life I had home equipment. Started with an exercise cycle (Lifecycle) in the 80s and graduated to a Precor treadmill in the 90s and after some trauma/injuries (I am queen Klutz) I went to my Arc Trainer. Then I added my Pilates Reformer and free weights. I saved lots of money on gym memberships and gym clothing etc and I am very disciplined and prefer working out by myself. I am very grateful I have my home workout gym because it is the one thing saving my sanity. That and my daily pint of ice cream.

What's your ice cream flavor of choice, @missy? Mine is mint chip and anything with salted caramel!

We live in an itty bitty city house but if I had the space, I'd definitely have some kind of home gym! It would ideally have a treadmill, elliptical, and weight machines. My husband would probably want free weights, too. We'd love to convert our son's tiny bedroom to a super-mini sized gym when he goes off to college next fall, but I'm not sure he'd go for that, haha.

I'm like you -- I totally prefer exercising alone and avoid doing it with others at all costs. But I've made an exception for my hubby...we've been doing fitness videos together since shelter-in-place began. He's the one person who I would happily exercise with. In fact, we have dreams of getting a tandem bike (I love that you and Greg go tandem cycling together!) but we hear they're super-heavy and challenging to operate. Plus we don't have the space for it. Maybe someday though!

Pre-pandemic, I went to the gym regularly to use the elliptical and sometimes the weights, but it was a necessary evil. I *really* dislike exercising around others. I'm the only one in my friend group who NEVER goes running with others. I need the freedom to go at my pace. And I need to be alone with my thoughts and not feel obliged to chit-chat. Plus, I just don't have what it takes to run AND talk at the same time (I'm in awe of those who can!).

I love salted caramel!!! That’s what I’ve been eating every night! If I could eat anything (dairy) I would choose Ben and Jerry’s Heathbar crunch. :lickout:

Oh it would be amazing if you and your dh got a tandem. They are heavy and take up space but we keep it in the bike shed at our beach house. Wouldn’t fit in our apartment here. I hear you on space being a premium. Let’s just say the Reformer is in our library which doesn’t make my dh happy. But he understands the reason.

If you guys want any info re tandems please don’t hesitate to reach out!

You will be the first person I reach out to if/when we're ever in the fortunate position to get a tandem! Thank you!! 8)

HI:

I walked today to get take out!:lol-2: Burger and fries.

cheers--Sharon

Took another walk today! Only abut 3,500 steps but better than nothing. Didn't the health data thing on the iphone used to show distance as well as steps... ?

Making crispy baked chicken for dinner. Very sophisticated recipe! Coat the chicken in egg, slap on some Italian breadcrumbs, bake.

HI:

Rode 16k in the sunshine! Icy and some snow on the path but all in all good ride. I've gained so much weight my underwear doesn't fit! LOL

cheers--Sharon

Happy Sunny Saturday kids!

Took advantage of the gorgeous day and went for a walk. Not as far as I'd thought, only 7K steps, but better than sitting here eating little mini powdered sugar donuts... not that I would EVER do something like that... :Up_to_something: :lickout:

There has been discussion of chicken in some form for dinner, but no progress has been made on that front... by anyone. Including me. Better figure something out or the children will start eating the dogs soon.
