The Gen Z stare - have you noticed this?

I have noticed that some seem to have a dull affect. I thought maybe it was all the weed, but no one smoked more than the boomers, and they're fine. lol So now I'm thinking it's either that this generation is overmedicated or maybe it's a cultural thing. I'm a millennial and definitely feel like they seem disengaged, almost as if it's uncool to be vibrant? I don't know... I suppose every generation thinks the next one is strange.

Went out to lunch today - party of three. I reached the hostess stand first where there was a beautiful young lady standing behind the stand. There were no other waiting customers. I said, “Hello, how are you?” And was met with the silent stare! No ‘can I help you’ - nothing but the stare. I finally told her we were a party of three. She picked up three menus and walked in front of us to a booth. That was it - she never uttered a word!! Completely unacceptable!

Prior to that, I was at my bank. Sitting at a desk with a bank rep doing some bank business. The tellers were to our far left. Yet every time a customer walked in the door, at least one teller said hello and welcomed them. What a difference in these two places! I expect to be spoken to when entering a restaurant - not as much so when entering a bank. At either place though, it makes a world of difference. Stop the stare!!

Today I stopped at an antique mall.
I told the lady (my age) at the counter that I wanted to look at something in a jewelry case that was in another room.

She handed keys to a young man (25- ish) working there. He looked up from his phone, took the keys, stood up and stared at me.
So I proceeded to walk to the case. He followed me. He opened the case and took out the item, a loose, very large star diopside. Dead silence. I showed him the star by shining my phone flashlight on it. Awkward silence. So I started to talk about this stone, comparing it to star sapphire. He mumbled, "oh, that's cool"
That was all I could get out of him.

I guess an old lady babbling about gemstones was not his cup of tea.

Maybe they just don't want to talk to anyone who looks "old" to them.

Perhaps. Other than being a key carrier, what are the other responsibilities of his job? Interacting with customers? Offering help or assistance with other pieces? These silent workers are just beyond the pale to me!

I agree that it is totally unacceptable for the hostess not to greet you. I'm starting to think that the next time that happens to me, I'll just stand there staring at them, remaining mute, and see how long it takes them to actually say something.

The generational disrespect is of long standing. Agatha Christie's Miss Marple says "The young people think the old people are fools - but the old people *know* the young people are fools."

When you do that, don't stand too close.

And that sort of quote is exactly why old people no longer get automatic respect from young people anymore.

I’ve personally seen the GenZ stare at my hair salon and at the post office. They only look at me because their jobs require it. Otherwise, they wouldn’t make eye contact with me at all…unless I dressed up in a cell phone costume.

I have a solution.

Apparently Gen Z is more comfortable interacting with screens.
So to get one to talk to you, and make eye contact :eek2: reach for your iPad.
Open FaceTime and and ...

I have a RBF so......

@Arcadian Enquiring minds desperately want to know ... what RBF stands for?

Really Big Foam?
Really Big Fern?
Really Big Frock?
Really Big Fig?
Really Big Father?
Really Big Feather?
Really Big Fuchsia?
Really Big Friend?
Really Big Football?
Really Big Fire?
Really Big Fright?
Really Big Flashlight?
Really Big Frog?
Really Big Furnace?
Really Big Fiasco?
Really Big Fascination?
Really Big Farmhouse?

I don't think that is meant disrespectfully. We older gen now know that we were also "fools" at that age. Most generations
go through that phase. However, I do think we all should be treated with respect and should treat others with respect (no matter
age or generation), until given a reason not to*.

*I'm undecided what that reason might be. Is it the fact that someone doesn't acknowledge you, and what's the best way to respond to
hopefully elicit the appropriate behaviour in the future?

lol I've freaked some people out before which is always kinda funny. Topped with the fact that I'm a smile on the inside type. I very seldom smile in public. (it takes a lot of work y'all)

Some people just dont like talking.
Which is why I will be the one taking a nap in the corner at parties.
Mine Wifey said once I would go a month without speaking a word if she didn't ask me stuff. I thought about it and yep been there done that but not since I got married. I have to tell her I love her at least 5 times a day so that's at least 15 words every day add 10 thank yous for 20 more.

Thinking bout it its more like 12 i love yous for 36 words :}

You never stop talking with your typing fingers Karl.
Imagine if you were deaf - you could talk with hands and fingers!

i was about to say
remind me who generation Z is ?

Gen Z are the last ever generation - because its the last letter in the alphabet, and AI is taking over. And they know it, so why get engaged when you know your all on death row?

Holiday is over 10 days ago.
Now it's nose to the grindstone.
Never ever been so hard to buy food diamonds!
Tarrffs causing mayhem as diamonds run up miles and loose valuable information!

How are tariffs affecting you, @Garry H (Cut Nut) ? Where are you buying your diamonds from? Are they going up for
all countries due to the U.S. tariffs?

More often than not, that sort of thing is used as an excuse to treat people my age like we are stupid, or unworthy of respect or simply being treated like a human. And far, far too many people seem to be unable to remember or acknowledge that they were, too, the fool once.
Inexperienced? Maybe. I’m certainly inexperienced but I’ve seen some stuff. A fool? If I were a fool I would be dead by now.

You are absolutely correct. All people - regardless of their age - should be treated with respect and decency and should expect the same in return. However, when you are an employee of a facility, I do think the expectation would be that you would greet or interact with a customer in an appropriate manner. I am sure you would do this but sadly, many don't. On the other hand, there are lots of curmudgeons in the world that are just plain hateful to all they meet. They should leave the chip on their shoulder at home when interacting with the public - young or old.

For example - two stones we were offering to clients were shipped from India to NYC this week. Typically Indian firms will take stones and have ASET images made for us. Many Indian manufacturers already have them on websites or on file. As soon as they leave India all the great info is deleted.
Seems that only professionals understand ASET and other useful stuff.
The jewelers in USA and the wholesale reps perhaps have IQ's <100???

Almost all Indian companies have sent their goods to USA.
When they leave India the prices go up to wholesale.

@Rockdiamond has kindly offered to help out with ASET images!
Thanks Mate 8-)2

The overwhelming majority of young people I see don’t do the stare. When I see it, I often wonder what this person’s life is like, If they are okay or happy. My DH and I have been to dinner often where you see a family having dinner and everyone is on their phones, not talking to each other. I think older people had it easier then younger people today have it.

This is somewhat of a threadjack....probably should be discussing on Rockytalk, but I am interested to know how things are
working.

I assumed that your diamonds would go from India to you (Australia) and that US tariffs wouldn't affect you (well, not
too much). But, if you are calling for stones in the US that came from India, then I expect that they may be jacked up.
Why are they deleting the associated info? Did this happen before the tariffs?
