The first of my commissioned stones to arrive--Green Tourmaline

Ok, So the first few pictures, especially the first one, is the basic look I am going for. I want the halo (would I even call this a halo or just pave?) to be small, to not add a lot of mms. but to be protective of the edges of the stone. So maybe set more like the second picture. Then I need to decide on a number of melee questions, which the other pictures show ideas for --diamonds and green? diamonds and pink? pink and green? pink and green and diamonds? Various random sizes or uniform sizes? A pattern or random placement? How much of each color?

These are my favorite problems to have. lol Because you can't lose! Personally, I'd really like to see some pink. So I'm thinking either pink and diamonds or pink, green, and diamonds. I always like to throw a little frosting in there. But just the pink would look nice too.

haha!! After sleeping on it, I am thinking pink, green and diamonds! The whole shebang! I think the only other thing there I need to decide is if I want random sizes or uniform sizes. Oh, and how far around the ring to put the melee. I am thinking it may be uncomfortable to have it sitting in between my fingers, though I do love the look of melee all the way around. Do you have any experience with that?

I actually have really strong feelings about this. lol I am a big believer in only putting the stones far enough around so you see them from the top and at a bit of an angle when worn. I see no reason to spend the $ on putting them even 3/4 of the way around. And if the melee is larger, yes, it can be uncomfortable. However, you'll notice that I made an exception with my pad ring. I just felt it was an heirloom piece, and since the band tapered, I should go ahead and do 3/4. I NEVER put them in the back though. You're just begging to knock a stone out. Even eternity bands... I go 1/2 or 3/4, never 360*. But as usual, it's preference! :geek2:

Super helpful as always! I was already inclined not to do it, because I want it to be comfortable to wear. And good grief I do not want to lose a stone! I was thinking I would need to leave at least some plain metal in the back in case it ever needed resizing. The green band in my pictures with the randomly sized melee (I am really liking that look btw for a casual ring) stops half way. I think I may need to stop it a little before, because there must be a ridge at the border where the stones stop and the plain metal begins. Feeling that between my fingers would drive me batty. I am like the Princess and the Pea!

Definitely yellow IMO.

I have trouble seeing this gem with pink bc it is mossy at times and also has some yellow, but I’m sure if you find the right shade it will work!

I am not familiar with your collection…. Do you have pave shanks rings? I prefer plain shanks myself.

Thanks Dreamer. No pave shanks yet, it will be a first. I love pink so much I tend to think of it as a neutral. I think a peachier pink will work--maybe I will look for pink tourmaline melee. I can't capture it well enough, but most of the time this stone looks quite pastel in person. Its greenness is all over the place.

I might suggest you look for melee in the color you want and not worry about species as I think some gems work better in very small sizes re: holding color. Yvonne Raley has amazing melee and I’ve never seen tourmaline which makes me think it isn’t a great option? Sapphire, spinel, garnet are more common and I’ve seen many shades of pink!
