True. And when it comes to very important issues where people's lives are at stake, it's horrifying when uneducated people who lack critical thinking skills are allowed to spread dangerous misinformation unchecked, which we are also seeing the results of.

Of course, that kind of mass confusion has been fostered now from people in high places who benefit from people not understanding what's going on around them, which is why it's so prevalent. And there are many, many people who aren't able to discern even obvious, basic facts from deliberate obfuscation. They believe the nonsense they hear from those around them.

I don't think it can be completely eradicated but it can definitely be checked and it definitely should be checked.

One very basic way is for people to be called out when they're spreading propaganda, misinformation or lies. That includes them cherry picking small incidents and claiming they are good reason to get rid of very necessary larger issues, such as with vaccinations. That's how we get polio, measles etc. back. And of course, the repercussions are serious, so it's not just armchair leisure chit-chat.

As I mentioned before, that would mean you (general "you" there) don't get to spout nonsense, then when called on it, say that you "Don't have to provide a source for the irresponsible and inaccurate statement, neener-neener, it's "not my job," followed with yet more nonsense, ad infinitum. A productive discussion requires a better attitude than that, and listening as well as talking.

Okay then, that person could and imo should be kicked OUT of the discussion. That person then sees that they've been corrected and other people see it, too. No one can force them to "get it" but at least they've been checked.

Refusing to back up statements with any source at all and going on and on without addressing statements that what you've posted is incorrect (just wanting to "win") is not discussing in good faith. It is controlling ruining an intelligent discussion AKA trolling. Repeat offenders should be banned imo. That definitely cuts down on the spread of dangerous misinformation and keeps discussions on a level above frustrating and stupid arguments dictated by trolls. That could definitely be done or at least attempted, no?
