I want to see what PS'ers felt about the acceptance of modified diamonds (Solesfera, Eighternity, Star 129......).

I think they're nice, but not really any prettier than an ideal-cut round brilliant. They have a different kind of sparkle. If I remember correctly, the Solasfera and Star129 have more "pinfire," whereas the traditional round brilliants have bigger, broader flashes.

Edit: Oops, didn't see you were in the middle of constructing a poll, and I may not have really answered the question you're asking. I'll check back after the poll is done!

They may be beautiful, but I wasn't interested in paying the price premium over the typical H&A superideal. They may sell better if the prices drop in line with H&A stones. I couldn't really vote for either option on the poll.

agreed.

I think we should all just interpret someday to be when patents are expired or prices drop

OK, I voted for the 2nd option because I think the traditional H&A will always be the most popular cut. I don''t necessarily think modified cuts will fade away, but they won''t come close to the popularity of the RB.

none of the above....

The poll is asking the wrong questions. 95% of the new cuts introduced in the past 5 years were created not because of consumer demand for alternatives but because of De Beers''s Supplier of Choice program, which required sightholders to conduct their own marketing and branding initiatives. Coming up with some sort of "new" cut looked like an easy route to branding... until every other diamond manufacturer did the same thing and there were 200 new designs on the market. Most will never be heard from again simply because there''s no reason for their existence, especially since De Beers has since realized what a dumb idea the whole thing was and changed the rules for the next round of sightholder selections.

I voted for #3 but honestly none of those apply to my opinion - which is "they will become simply more options, neither equal to nor surpassing the old standards, and yet not necessarily falling away to oblivion either." I'm not particularly fond of the scint in a leo stone but they definitely have a lot of white light return.... different preferences *deserve* different options and I'm glad they're all out there to be had.
