Dear PSers,

not sure if RT is the right sub-forum, but let me ask my question here. What's your opinion on tension settings? Are they safe for the stone (and fingers alike… ;) )?

TS's "floatiness" seems to be an excelent visual effect such settings give to the stones. But I would worry the stone could be easily damaged by accident, especially round cut as they seem to be less fixed than e.g. asschers or radiant cuts. Do you have any experiences with TS?

I think the factors of frequency of wear and how rough you are with your rings/how much you do with your hands.
My WR is tension set, but there are teeny tiny prongs that reinforce the safety of the stones.
I wear it every day. I have had both end stones (it’s a 3/4 eternity) repaired for loose stones. They take the most beating.

From what I've read they are very safe. But buying from someone experienced with tension settings is critical. Not everyone makes them correctly.

IMO, Tension setting are very safe. My first one was from
Gelin Abaci (no longer in business) my last two are made by Bruce Boone. I love tension b/c the stone is easy to keep clean.

My first is on an Asscher..

Looking at those pictures makes me so anxious as if one could knock the diamond out of the setting or as if the tension in the setting could smash the diamond
But so very beautiful!

I am sure I read somewhere that the Neissing settings squeeze the stone at 12000lb/sq inch - which seems pretty secure! lol

Into dust??... :o

Love tension setting... so easy to clean and so beautiful.... seamless... the stone really sings.

@kenny is the expert on tension settings. He have been sporting one for years.

OK, so I've done some additional reading here on the forum.

I think it is important with respect to the stone's protection to have TS with the stone set more deeply in the channel so the table is below the metal. The band should also be thicker than the diameter of the diamond. All this however creates the ring more bulky with the diamond looking a bit smaller…

"Floatiness" vs. "shapeliness" ;) Hard to choose!

Tension set diamonds show of the diamond in a most complete way. The diamond is surely easy to keep clean. The downside is that the stone is less protected from potential damage, the ring is very difficult to have re-sized and if the stone become loose you need to go back to the original seller to retain any warranty on stone security.
While not for everyone, they are clean, attractive and timeless.

@Pecel Niessing settings seem to barely touch the girdle. It is worth seeing them.
