Temporary Setting questions

I would like to learn more about it for I am not entirely sure about temp. settings.
I could ask various vendors but I feel bad overloading them with "dumb" questions.
What is the general consensus on temp settings?

1) Are temporary settings actually full proper settings whereby the stone sits securely to withstand daily usage?
Or are these settings only just meant to hold the diamond in place and one needs to return the setup back to the shop soon for the permanent chosen setting design??

2) Do seller charge for the temp setting and the buyer keeps the temp setting?
Or will the seller take the temp setting back and credit the cost to the future permanent setting?

If the latter, is there a time period for the temp setting to be used in the real world settings? (after all the temp setting band would be subjected to real world usage)

3)
How much additional cost is one looking at to mount and unmount a diamond from the temp to permanent?

TIA

A temp setting is usually just the cheapest, setting one can find, which is usually a totally plain four prong setting in 14K gold. However you can use anything that's cheap. I've bought some fancier pretty cast repro filigree settings and used them as temp settings for around $100ish (from jewelrrings.com) and also from eBay from Americanset- their Tiffany repro, for around the same price. I think most people tend to spend a bit more on them; whatever the cheapest option from your jeweler is, usually. Basically it's just a way for a stone to be wearable while you find the permanent setting. I wanted an actual antique setting, so I used mine for maybe three months.

I've heard of a few jewelers allowing you to return a temporary setting and providing them free, but that's pretty rare I suspect. Usually you pay for it and keep it.

As far as setting/unsetting costs, that varies. I go to an actual independant bench worker rather than using a jeweler- he tends to charge me about $20-$30 to set a stone, and free to unset. YMMV, though.

haagen dazs, you should get a special recognition award for thoroughness. (I've been lurking.)

Basically, few or maybe no insurers will insure an unmounted diamond or at least that was the case a few years ago. Once it's mounted, it's harder to lose and can can be insured. If you put your diamond in a "temporary" mounting, the quality of it is whatever you choose. Get a heavy mounting or a flimsy one, depending on how temp is is to be.

Oh, yes, and you're probably not going to get much trade-in for a used mounting. Scrap gold value. Keep it and put a gemstone or something in it.

(What am I doing here? Updating my database before I buy my upgrade diamond, lol.)

I agree, you're thinking this through beautifully.

Temporary setting - usually a basic 4 or 6 prong setting that can be worn, keeping the diamond secure. DH did this - he got me the cheapest 6 prong they had, and told me to pick my own reset. It took me 3 years to actually do anything about it, since I actually kinda liked my "temp" setting, LOL.

If you're suprising her with the ring, most women want to immediately run around and dangle it under people's noses - this is why having it secure in a setting is a good thing.

If you're picking the stone and setting together, well, then I guess you would not be asking this question.

I think they are just called ring holders, good idea as that could be an option.

I thought so too, but trying to google it comes up with all sort of other stuff that I gave up.
