Tell me about your small wins today!

Do you happen to have the reference to the bill you're referring to? I'm interested to read it. I'm assuming it's new and not the one that was being referenced in December which was not reported accurately.

I saw it on the news this morning. I’m sorry I can’t find it. I’ll search more for it tomorrow. I do have a quote from their governor

Oh maybe what he is referring to is the property development bill about a Muslin community. I think it was a House Bill. I'll look for it.

Edited to add this must be what he referred to. I was wondering how the bill was written. I only skimmed it but will read it again. It's not a "ban" per se, but a restriction on the development saying that it can't be discriminatory (among other things). But I'll go through it more thoroughly. I've attached a link to the bill.

“Governor Abbott was clear that EPIC City has serious legal issues and is not allowed to begin construction,” press secretary Andrew Mahaleris said in a statement. “He was proud to sign HB 4211 to ensure developments like EPIC City are unable to impose Sharia law in Texas or create ‘no go zones’ by selling or renting land only to individuals who subscribe to a developer's religious preference. Texas will continue to defend our communities from any threats posed by EPIC City or other entities seeking to create a discriminatory or illegal compound.”

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I was looking using the wrong terms.

Dinner last night included fresh veggies from the garden: green beans, cucumber, arugula, and I had a ripe cherry tomato when I was picking the beans. YUM! Salmon for protein, and other salad greens.

Plus, had to thin more peaches from the tree (it's a bounty year!), and brought them inside to ripen a bit. Tried one, and although it's "crunchy", it's really sweet. Amazing!

I live in Texas, not far from Austin. This issue is receiving very little airtime discussion on my local news stations or on TPR, and I watch /listen to them every day. I’ll have to read more about this!
What we are all focused on here is the horrible floods and all the human lives and animals lost in the flooding. The beautiful hill country of Kerrville, Comfort, Ingram, Hunt and smaller nearby communities will never be the same. Hundreds of families will never be the same. Please keep them all in your prayers, no matter what religion you are.

I finally stopped procrastinating and in spite of it being scorching hot I got the garage cleaned out and organized and there's a pile of junk on the patio ready to be taken to the dump. A bonus is that I finished before the smoke from wildfires moved in and made the air quality unhealthy to breathe.

There's nothing so satisfying as a clean garage and purging useless items.

I need to do that in my basement. I need inspiration. I'm only able to do a little bit at a time and I need to do a marathon.

Post a photo of something you wish to acquire on a basement wall and get it when you've finished the marathon cleanup whether you do it a little at a time or all at once. Rewards are the spice of life.

Good idea. I'll try it and let you know if it works!

Anyone to help you? Can you ask a neighbours teenager for a few hours of time a day for a week--and pay them? I used to pay my babysitter to cut my lawn as well. He then got customers on our blocks cuz he was so motivated!!!! Young folks like pocket cash and you'd know them.

Well, yes, but that's really not the kind of help I need. I just have so many things that I need to go through in plastic tubs. Things like linens and blankets, vintage pottery wrapped up, banking information, Christmas decorations I no longer use, etc. All the things you have when you live in a house too long. Once I got it sorted, getting it out isn't the issue. It's the sorting. And it doesn't help because my adult daughter is sentimental and doesn't like it when I get rid of things but won't take them to her apartment. Wants me to keep them here.

Gotcha. My DH and son are also sentimental and in part attached to things that may be irrelevant.. And neither of them, can, get rid of anything. And dislike the hard work associated with this. So I it is my job and I accept that they may not like decisions about what I do in our home.

Anyway, sorry, this isn't helpful. But I have lived your experience (my Mom, my MIL and now my home) and wish you success. One plastic tub, one hour at a time.

Went to dermatologist today for a body check for cancer. I passed with flying colors. Only had to have a few things burned off. And got some other tips and meds to take care of my irritated, dry autoimmune skin. Good win for today!

Of course. We donated and I am keeping all those families in my thoughts. Such a tragedy beyond comprehension :(

Thank you ,Missy! I’ve been sending our donations to the animal rescue groups.
There isn’t a living creature in the hill country that hasn’t been affected in some way or other.
Few people up there, or anywhere for that matter, have flood insurance. If they were lucky enough to survive but have flood damage, they face quite a challenge ahead of them.I have read that foreclosures increase after floods. People still have mortgages, even if they no longer have the home that goes with that mortgage. So,so very sad.

Had to thin some more peaches—I somehow missed a branch, so they were much too crowded. Brought them in to ripen, and this morning, despite them seeming a bit firm, ate one. Gaaaah!!! Totally gorgeous! Sweet, very juicy, and delicious! Huge win. :D

I would have thought that lender's would require flood insurance if you're in a flood prone area. Is that not the case?

Some lenders may require it. IDK..However, not up in the hill country where the flooding occurred. We have heard story after story about the residents not having any flood insurance. In fact, several years ago, someone was able to get an area of Camp Mystic ( the Christian girls camp) rezoned so that more cabins could be built in a severe flood prone area. There will be investigations for sure, perhaps even law suits down the road. The owner ( since 1974) of Camp Mystic died while trying to save some of the girl campers. Everything about this whole situation is so sad and there are a whole lotta “ if only” things about it too….. if only Kerrville had flood warning sirens, if only there had been NOAH weather radios at campgrounds, if only the heavy rain had started during daytime, if only it hadn’t been 4th of July weekend,, and on and on. Ok, I quit. It’s just too depressing and not what this thread was intended for. I suppose that I could add a “small win” though. I bought several little NOAH weather radios. When we have a storm coming in, I will be keeping one close by. When we travel, I will take one along. Everyone should have some sort of weather alert system these days. We never know what Mother Nature is going to throw at us.

Again with the peaches. Oh. Em. Gee.!!! Fresh peaches, right off the tree, still warm from the sun. Sooooo sweet, so flavourful, so juicy! And there are gazillions of them! Our wee terrier absolutely loves fresh peaches. :D It's a race to the tree if one has fallen onto the lawn.
