Ok, this is a really weird question to ask, but I''m pretty confused about my ankles lately and was wondering if anybody had any info for me (I swear people on PS know the answer to almost everything!)

Lately I''ve noticed that both of my ankles, but my right one in particular, are a bit swollen. Specifically the area on the outside of my foot around the bottom and back of my ankle bone (I hope this makes sense; I''ll see if I can post a diagram of what I''m talking about). The area is a bit puffy, not hard and swollen, just soft and puffy. My ankles don''t hurt and they''ve been like this for at least a few weeks, so I don''t think it''s trauma related. I did have some busy weeks on my feet, but I''ve been pretty lazy and sitting around the office for the past week and they''re still swollen (haven''t been wearing heels either).

So what gives! I feel like I''m developing cankles

Is there some kind of underlying injury there? Is it related to the shoes I wear?

Is it hot where you are? Mine are swelling up because its so warm here. Which is unusual for north east England!

I didn''t even think of that! It hasn''t been above 80 much (which is unusual) but it''s still quite a bit hotter than it was, say, two months ago. That could be it. I''ve never noticed it happen during the summer before, but I''ll definitely have to watch now and see if it''s heat related.

I don''t like the idea that I''m going to have cankles every summer though

Aww its not so bad. Just make sure you don''t get fat fingers. Thats the worst. I can''t wear any rings at all!

It could be edema, which is something a doctor should investigate. It may just be water retention too. I would see a doc.

Probably a good idea! you can get lower extremity edema from a number of things- genetics, heart, kidney, liver problems.

Oedema feels very hard to the touch, whereas you say yours is a bit puffy but soft?

I''ve just spent 6 weeks with no ankles or knees even due to oedema (cured it by giving birth

) and it''s seriously uncomfortable.

Not always. I''ve had edema in the past, and it''s always been soft and squishy. Mine was not pregnancy related. I''ve had it in my hands and feet at different times. Since it can signal organ problems, it needs to be checked, always.

My ankles and hands swell when it''s hot, but especially when it''s humid. They get hot and red and almost itchy/painful. Watch your salt intake, up your water and maybe try elevating your feet every so often.
