Switched Diamonds - I can't believe this happened

After researching a new princess cut diamond for our 10 year anniversary my hubby purchased the following diamond almost a year and a half ago:
1.52ct, F, VS1, 6.21x6.16x4.59
table 69%
depth 74.5%
girdle very thick
GIA, 14880141

I received a call from the jeweler this week that the diamond I actually received was
1.51ct, F, SI1, 6.26x6.26x4.69
table 75%
depth 74.1%
girdle medium-thick
GIA, 2101843862

The jeweler offered to 1) switch the diamonds or 2) give me a $2000 refund for the difference. I'm wondering - which of these two is the better cut diamond? I'd like to end up with the best diamond (and we've already paid for the higher priced one) - and I had selected the one that I felt was best to the eye. Unfortunately no one knows when the switch happened and the diamond is now at a third party (this is the place that caught the error). If I should stay with the diamond that I was given, is the $2000 sufficient (fair) to cover the difference in price between the two?

What a mess!

Just off the top of my head...do you like (actually love) your current stone? Have you bonded with it? Can you see any inclusions
in your stone that bother you?

We would need to see images of the 2 stones to see which one was actually nicer.

$2k seems very fair for 2 clarity grades off. I checked JA but they dont have a lot of VS1s in your size.

No on both accounts - I am not bonded with the stone. There are not any inclusions that bother me. When I compared the two stones in the store one was obviously more brilliant and that was the one I went with.... but now I am not sure which one I have because there no way to know if they were switched before or after I looked at them.

I don't know if this is possible, but I would want to return this stone and get my money bck...start the search over again.

Is the girdle inscribed?

I'd maybe return it as well and start over

The diamond that I have is inscribed. I chose this local jewelry company based on the stellar reputation and willingness to alter my engagement ring - other local jewelers told me I'd have to start over and purchase an all new setting.

Are you suggesting that maybe these two diamonds are both poor? This certainly could be an opportunity to purchase something else. One of the downsides of using a local jeweler is that there were only two diamonds that I even wanted to look at in this size and quality range.

There's really no way to know how well your stone performs. Pictures may help a bit - can you get some macro shots straight down on it?

If you google GIA 14880141 it appears that stone is mounted in another ring. I'd either take the discount or perhaps get a new diamond altogether as the situation is just too peculiar.

Get a refund and start over. It is possible neither one is good. But the one you have has a HUGE table, and I'd take the opportunity to get a refund, come back here, and we can show you some excellent cut princess cut stones.
