Studs: size or color?

Planning to get a pair of diamond studs for myself, but am vacillating between
a pair of Gs 1 ctw
a pair of H/I 1.2ctw

Both pairs are SI1 clarity super-ideals and are about the same price, so I'm in a dilemma.

I know I'm not very color sensitive as I've inherited a H color ring and a pair of 0.6 ctw F color studs, and I can't really tell the difference between them. But I've also looked at the measurements of the stones and found that there's literally only a hair's breadth difference in size (roughly 5.2mm against 5.4mm) between the two pairs.

So will it be better to go with the Gs? Or sacrifice color for a slight increase in size?

Do you have any pictures? Any certificate?
It 'd be easier to give you some advice if you could provide further details.

In my opinion, if the price is the same, and the size difference is VERY minimal, I would go with the G. Either way, I do not think that the size or the color will be different enough for you to teel with the naked eye. But I get the feeling that you would like ot have the Gs over the H-I studs.

I think either would be lovely. Amazingly you can see the difference in size when they are side by side; on your ear though you'd never notice. If they are almost equal in price I would go for the larger size.

I would definitely go with the H's, the color difference will be negligible especially when on the ears but I think the size difference will be noticeable, since it will cover more of the earlobe. Color is really only visible from the side, when those are on the ears they will look white and sparkly.

Absolutely agree with this. You will be able to see the size difference more than the color difference. I care more about color in a ring stone, but H is still acceptable to me in a ring. I just ordered some earring stones to look at and they are I-J color, and I seriously cannot see the color face up. And face up is all you can see when they are on your ears!

Here are the specs of the diamonds...

The 1.2ctw H/I will cost about $70 more than 1ctw Gs

I would go for the larger size, as you really don't see color from face up on earrings. I have a pair of J color studs (4.9mm each) and all I see is white white white when they are on my ears. I think an increase in size is definitely more noticeable on earrings than 1 grade in color would be.

I would do the larger H/I with all things being the same.

Down to about K colour, I would always choose size over colour. I have J studs and love them

Both the diamond couples are excellent performers, but, according to the HCA scores, the Gs are better than the Hs ...I 'd buy the Gs.

You don't really need to use the HCA when the stones are all ideal cut. These stones are all ideal on symmetry and light performance, so that is sufficient information to judge the stones. The HCA is more useful when dealing with stones that are GIA Excellent in order to see if they'd fall in the AGS ideal range (or stones from any other lab).

I found this video http://vimeo.com/5203257 from GOG comparing a G SI1 H&A against a I SI1 H&A

Has the video captured a good representative of how G and I color diamonds will look in real life?

Thanks for all the opinions so far :)

I always go for higher color if all other factors are equal. I know that that is an unfashionable point of view, but I thought I would make

it known if only to add a little variety to the discussion. In fact, I have been trying to buy only D colored sidestones when I set colored

stones now. I tend to play with my diamonds, setting and unsetting them, and I really like having high colored ones with which to play.

I don't think you can tell so much about diamond color on video or in pictures. All I can tell you is that color matters less in ideal cut earring stones because all you see is light reflection face up. I have held the I-J stones I currently am looking at up to white paper and can't even see much color from the sides either. You just don't see it as much in stones this small. The ones I am looking at are .60, also. The great thing about Good Old Gold is that you have 30 days to decide if you order them to look at. I would certainly give the larger stones a chance. I was prepared to return these to get higher color smaller ones, but I am simply not seeing the color. Honestly, if Jon had sent them and told me to guess the color, I probably would have guessed H!

Thanks for the enlightenment, I'm happy to improve my diamond knowledge.
