stone options for sugarloaf ring?

Hi CS folks. I have always wanted a sugarloaf ring (bullet-shaped cabochon). With it's smooth finish, I am wondering if a sapphire would scuff over time? Are there any other well-wearing stone contenders you might suggest?

Thanks in advance!

With it having a smooth surface (no facets at the crown), it is less likely to be scuffed or chip, unlike a faceted stone. The only concern is the very top, but even then, it's pretty safe if worn with care.

I think any cabochon can scuff up. It depends how hard you are on your jewelry. However, sapphire being extremely hard, it’s less likely to scuff up then an opal or a moonstone, which can lose their polish over time.

Thank you @chrono and @TL
I gather sapphire would probably be at the top of the list for cab choices. Thank you for your input.
Generally, I am pretty easy on jewelry, being a lady of a certain (ahem) age, I am not doing much more than deskwork and dishes.

I have this untreated ruby sugarloaf, and I managed to scratch the ruby right away. :cry2:

Jpie no - that must have been heart breaking. That ring is everything perfect about a sugarloaf. A wet looking colorful gumdrop of jewel goodness. I wonder if someone could buff it out without too much trouble. It's a beautiful design.

Oh that is FABULOUS!. It definitely helped. I love designs that have that deco design look. Yummy!

@moneymeister I was upset at the time and thought about getting it polished, but I decided that since I have no intention of selling it & abrasion happens, I may as well think of it like wrinkles increasing with age.

It’s so beautiful. Is it Kataoka?

Sapphire. Lots more emeralds but I think that's too fragile for such an exposed setting. If you go emerald, I would absolutely insure it and wear it sparingly.

Jade is "softer" but incredibly tough for a cab -- but a nice color, nice translucency piece would be five figures and not your "sugarloaf" shape.

I agree it's a great look. Spouse has a very purple star sapphire that is like a jellybean. I like a transparent sugarloaf better but not really compatible with an asterism.

LilAlex, I agree that emerald is a little too fragile for a daily wear ring. I do love the look though. The jade idea is a great one and I had not thought of that. While the shape is not the coveted gumdrop, a beautiful antique jade cab is a great idea for a daily wear ring. I have recently become interested in jade, so that would be a nice choice. Although, my budget does not go into the imperial range, I might find a bit of translucent apple jade that would fit the bill.

I have also considered a star sapphire. I bet the spouses' ring is lovely. It's on the short list of interesting items to be sure. Also a ruby star would be nice.

There is no shortage of options, is there?

Heh, I am off to Ruby Lane to explore jade cab rings :)

@moneymeister I stumbled upon this sapphire sugarloaf and thought of you. The price is crazy but I figured the design is still good inspiration.

What beauty and unusual. Completely out of my wheelhouse, financially (honey would shoot me), but a great example of an inspiration ring. I love the fine level of craftsmanship in just about everything made long ago.

Not a sugarloaf but I've banged my Jade cab a few times and it's been fine. Not a scratch.

I've also banged the more delicate Jade flower carved rings and they've all been fine. The moh score is low but it seems really tough to me.

Just another option, this one in 18k white gold and a live auction ending tomorrow. Just sharing, in case anyone likes it. I think the setting is gorgeous!

Absolutely beautiful and very unique. I love the carving on the stone.
I'm having a 16 x 12 rounded top-grade polar jade cabochon cut for a ring. Not a true sugarloaf, but will be a happy daily wear ring. I am on a jade binge right now. Etsy shop JadeCarvingCanada. I also picked up a blue Guatemalan bead and a leaf pendant from the same vendor (vendor's photos).

It’s wonderful, domed goodness is welcome to the party. I would love a ruby ring like that one.

Actually DK, a good ruby is on my bucket list. I am very leery of anything I can afford :) Synthetics are great but not mind clean.

I have 2 rings, a jade and a pink tourmaline. They both are pre loved and there is not a scratch on them.
