I was recently diagnosed with IBS which has forced me to rethink the things I eat. After cutting grains and most sources of fructose I've been feeling much better! And I don't mind the fact that I've lost a few pound in the process of finding suitable groceries. I've also gained a new, little hobby... sprouting. I've tried sprouting green lentils and tonight I decided to try sprouting soy beans.

Do other PSers sprout seeds? What are your favorites?

I will watch this thread with interest, having been quite keen on sprouting some years ago (before I had kids).

Eta: but I can't remember sprouting anything too exciting... Maybe lentils? Onion and alfalfa? Does your health food store offer different mixes?

I tried sprouting mung beans with some success. Just put some in a jar, shake with some water, leave the jar in a dark warm place like an airing cupboard, wash and change water daily, and I got a good crop in a few days. Nice as part of a salad in the summer.

DK :))

LaraOnline It might be fun for your kids to try sprouting. I remember being a kid and sprouting ryegrass for Easter (it's a tradition here in Finland, don't know about the rest of the world) and it was always so exciting to see it grow! =) So far I've just been doing experiments on the things already in my kitchen cupboards. Flax seeds might be the next ones to try as I got a bag of flax seeds from my mom last weekend and also a visit to the local health food store might not be a bad idea.

dk168 I've also heard that mung beans are relatively easy to sprout and also taste pretty good. Maybe I really should pay a visit to the health food store... :Up_to_something:

Part of why I ended up doing this is that I do like the idea of knowing exactly what's in my food. During summer I like to grow strawberries and herbs in my little pot garden in the balcony and this gives a chance to do this in wintertime too. Also sprouts taste good!

Hey Kalomeli! I meant to respond to this thread when you first posted it because I was really interested. I just went to a meeting of the local Master Gardener Association last night and the speaker did a presentation (complete with physical examples and samples!) on Sprouting! It was awesome. We were all given a screened lid to fit a medium or large Mason or Ball jar, along with instructions and information about all the types of sprouts you can sprout! I'm definitely going to try it, I LOVE sprouts! I'll post here again once I get seeds and start my sprouting process. I'm posting links of the videos we were shown because I found them really interesting and informative!

The speaker also did a demonstration on chia. We were given samples of orange juice with chia seeds she'd soaked while she was speaking--it was like drinking a kiwi fruit! So good, and so beneficial.

I have started growing broccoli sprouts! I had a GI infection and still have malabsorption as a result. Broccoli sprouts are supposed to be anti inflammatory so thought I would give them I try.

Bonus, they're tasty!

Alfalfa, radish, mung. That's my big three. It's pretty easy, and we all did it back in the 1970's. :sun:

These days, be sure you get organic. Back then, organic wasn't a thing.
