SI3 means I1 at best, so I personally wouldn't be interested in that. The I/J color is probably optimistic, too.

The picture has been doctored. SI at the girdle, means either bad chips or feathers there so you'd have to get real pictures of the inclusions and see what you have.

Personally, unless they seller gave you a bunch of really good, undoctored pics... I wouldn't risk it. But there is a 14 day return policy. So if you wanted to buy it AND pay for an appraisal to see what's going on, you could. Or if you have the ability and equipment to do a base evaluation yourself.

Pretty sure that's the bogey, it's doesn't look anything like a tweezer reflection

It's actually a pretty workable inclusion for someone who wouldn't mind some metalwork covering that area, I think...

Thank you DS and Gypsy. Such a good learning exercise for me. I figured I/J SI3 meant more like L/M I1 but it still comps favorably with those stats. Since the seller states the SI is on the girdle, I was hoping it was a chip that could be tucked away in a bezel. (I have no idea if that's even possible though!). But I am so naive - it never even occurred to me that the pictures might be doctored. I just thought it was a grainy picture. I think I'll have to stick to my $200 eBay annual budget for another year or so while I continue to learn from the eBay/second hand gurus around here.

Thanks again!!!

On ebay, Si3 or even SI2 usually means big eye visible inclusions! I have bought a few ebay SI2s that have been very nice, though. But I think the black mark Yssie circled is the inclusion in this case. Could probably be covered with a prong. But I think given that huge inclusions its overpriced. From a diamond vendor like that, you gotta think they know what they are doing ::)

Oh my - yes, I was think tweezer reflection. That's one ugly bogey! Not that it would be worth it for this stone, but I wonder if that's the kind of inclusion that could be lasered. I've been reading about clarity enhancement over at GOG's site. It's not for me but it sure is fascinating.

I guess you could do a Cathy Waterman style dramatic prong over it.

Maybe if it was an otherwise perfect 4 carat elongated antique cushion for $10k. Then I might suddenly love that kind of prong!

Very good point!

that would make an awesome pendant where no one is up close staring at it. not a bad looking pattern though, worth a peek.

IMO if lasering is an option for this stone, this sort of inclusion is the perfect candidate. If that inclusion was white it'd be insignificant once pronged IRL in a stone that size, so long as the prongs aren't super dainty, but it's a sizable inclusion so it still brings the price down.. Better lasered and white than big, black, obvious and untreated 8)

I even think black like that with tab style prongs it would make a good pendant. I agree with Mara that the facet pattern is pretty. Still feels pricey to me. You can get a stone without the black booger for not a huge amount more, on ebay, if you wait and search.

Then I shall wait and search!

Thank you for weighing in, Yssie, Dreamer, and Mara.
