Sneaking food into movies.

I don''t sneak food into the movie theater. I love their popcorn with lots of butter and salt. Anything else would be a let down.

Luckily, at theatres in our are area, they don''t seem to care if you bring food. We just carry it in and don''t try to hide it. When we lived in the mountains, there was one
theatre and a pizza shop next to it, and people would bring whole pizzas and sandwiches in with them!

My kids bring candy in sometimes, but most of the time I don''t eat anything. The popcorn feels like it coats the roof of my mouth with thick fake oil. I don''t know how
anyone eats that stuff. Yuck! Now, give me some popcorn with real butter at home and I am all over that.

I don't like popcorn or most mass-market candies, and I feel no need to eat during movies. But most of the theatres here sell very nice, high quality hot teas for less than I'd be paying at $tarbuck$, so I usually get one of those. DH likes popcorn, so he usually treats himself to a small bag. If I plan ahead, I do fill up my Sigg with water, but we rarely go to the movies and when we do, it's usually a spur-of-the-moment decision, so that doesn't happen much. If I have gum in my purse, I might chew it...otherwise, we don't sneak anything in.

MC, I was the shift manager of a small two screen theatre - used to be a stage theatre, with the dressing rooms, etc behind the downstairs screen. The upstairs cinema was made out of the old balcony, from when the theatre used to be segregated. It''s closed since I moved to Australia, with a new 8 screen cinema (by the same company) replacing it. The company has about 30 other locations around the midwest, I think.

I loved working there, but in 4 years I managed to claw my way up to earning something like 50 cents about minimum wage! It was awful, but they simply couldn''t have paid us more. I had great coworkers and time to do my homework in the evenings, so no real complaints.

I do understand bringing in more healthy food.

It''s definitely all bad for you, but I''m not sure how practical it would be to sell fresh fruit and veggies at the movies -- I can imagine how quickly it would all go off because the great majority of the public would not choose to buy it.

Yeah, okay, I was just curious. It''s funny that now that you''ve mentioned small theaters, DH and I rarely go to those (generally go to the big chain ones) but when we do, we do not sneak in food. Maybe it''s a subconscious thing. Sometimes we buy popcorn, however we usually eat beforehand. (We never take the kids to small theaters because it seems they have movies that aren''t for kids.)

Oh, there is a theater that sells REAL drinks which can be enjoyed while watching a film. This is a place I could make an acception to overpaying:

Ohhhh, I love movie theater popcorn! SO bad for you, but it's soooo good! I only eat it a few times a year at most as a huge treat. I apologize to my heart before I do, not that it makes it any better.

YUM. Warm...buttery...salty...crunchy....

It's that or nothing. When I do get the popcorn, I do buy the crazy $4 water because I hate the idea of being stuck in a theater for 2 hours THIRSTY! GAH!!!

I''ve been there! My best friend was obsessed with seeing a film there, and I''m so cheap that I refused to pay the ridiculous ticket amount.

SO, she brought me there for my birthday to see Fame when it first came out. (I still didn''t want to go, but she was so into it that I made the long drive there, anyway.)

Yeah, the seats were comfy, but it was so not worth the cost. If I ever brought DH there he would be snoring within minutes of sitting down! I ordered popcorn and a hot chocolate, I believe. It was only okay. I also found the waiters coming in and out of the theatre a bit distracting, they wore all black and scared the bejeezus out of me whenever they slunk over to my seat to take an order or bring some food.

Now, we had a brew and view theatre when I was in college, and *that* was a blast. The theatre was filled with old sofas, the beer was plentiful, and they always showed great movies. I think I saw The Big Lebowski there three times.

Wow I feel like the worst offender here! One night I was doing dinner and a movie with a best friend and we were running late for the movie. Our solution...sneak in 5 for 5 dollars arby''s sandwiches lol. The worst part, it was the dollar movie theatre. Cheapest girl date ever :)

But I don''t feel too bad, DH considers it blasphemy to not get popcorn at the movie theatre so we usually do that and soda for him, water or tea for me

We have a theatre like this by us too. It has an upstairs bar and grill and if you pay an extra 3 dollars they''ll bring your food to you in the theater''s balcony which has tables and extra big chairs (gee I wonder why lol). We usually grab chicken strips for 5 bucks and then head to the movie and dont get any popcorn if we do that. I have a hard time drinking and watching movies, i get so sleepy so I guess I don''t see the appeal? That probably is just my own issue though

How much are the tickets? I can''t seem to find the price without signing up. A brew and view sounds like HEAVEN. I''d never leave. Hide under the seats between showings.

Yeah, I get drowsy too. . .Normally, if we go out, we''ll get a drink around 4 and then go to a 5:00 showing and that seems to work out okay.

We did this once, we were waiting for a movie to start and had a drink across the street. I think it was xmen something or other. But I ended up falling asleep in the movie hahha

I will sometimes sneak a water in since I don''t want to pay $5 for one at the theater, but usually we have just had lunch or dinner at the mall before the movies so we aren''t hungry.
Sometimes hubby will get a hotdog and soda but that is not typical.

The theatre we go to has a Coffee Bean right outside that must have a deal going on with the theater because we are always allowed to bring those drinks in.

I watched Daybreakers Friday with my own sour gummi worms, gosh dang it. I have also brazenly walked past the ticket gentleman more than thrice with a Starbucks venti white mocha chai in hand. He didn''t blink. I bring my own eating crap because I''m neurotic and don''t want to waste time standing in the food lines. When I walk into the theater I want to GETTOMYSEATNOWNOWNOW so I can have the "best" seat.

I know, I''m a schmoo. Most of the time I don''t bring anything OR buy anything. ''Cause I ain''t that hungry.

Ha ha, MC--I have the best mental image of you hiding under the sofas between shows at the brew and view! The best part about that theatre was that it was super cheap, I don''t think the tickets were more than $3 each. Alas, my beloved brew and view in Champaign has since been torn down and turned into some chain restaurant. They took it down while I was still a student, and I remember reading a great article about how they found a guy''s wallet under the foundation. They found the owner, who lost it something like 20 years earlier. The wallet had old love notes from his wife in it!

Anyway . . . I can''t remember exactly, but I think the tickets were something like $22 or $26 a piece for the Gold Class cinema, and then the food was very overpriced. We each signed up for something on their website to get two $15 food vouchers, and we used all $30 to pay for a small popcorn, a hot chocolate, and some ice cream for my BFF.

When they first opened they were charging something like $34 a ticket, but I think they realized that people weren''t willing to pay that much. I think Gold Class is a big deal in Australia--any Aussies here to vouch for that? I recall reading that is where they started in the little booklet they gave me when I went to the movie.

We bring healthy snacks, but I never think of it as sneaking it in since the theater doesn't offer these types of foods (ummm, concealing it in my purse wedged between me and DH so they can't peek inside isn't REALLY sneaking, right?!)

Seriously though, as soon as they start selling healthy items I'll be happy to buy from the concession stand, but until then it's undercover fruit leather and trail mix and I'll just buy a bottle of water.

Yikes about the prices. I mentioned the theater to my DH and he commented on them being a rip-off. I also said I want to open a "Brew and View," after we save up some capital. He wasn''t very enthusiastic. lol I''m not sure why as I can imagine him going to one if we found a reasonably priced location.
