All else being equal (cut, clarity, price, etc.), which do you think most women prefer: 1.71 H vs. 1.42 D

My girlfriend has a size 5.5 finger...

Hi, delonn,

Good to see you again! You may recall that I was just choosing between a 1.37 and 1.63. I chose the 1.63 H VS1. My finger is also 5.5. So I think you know my answer!

ETA: If my husband surprised me with either of the ones you mentioned, I'd be delighted, though!!!

even price is the same??

I would choose the H color. That difference in color (D to H) wouldn''t be an issue for me!

1.71 h

Size for sure...I own a D and a G and to tell you the truth unless I turn them on their sides I can''t really see that much of a difference and even when I do turn them on their sides it''s a slight difference. If its a well cut stone it''ll face up white at an H anyway. Good luck

DSeeker - glad to hear you''re still on the boards after purchasing your rock. I started to think twice about the a 1.71 as I thought it might be too big on a 5.5 finger. Do you have your stone set yet...would love to see pics. If I recall you were also concerned about size. My gf and I come from very humble beginnings so I''m nearly certain that it will be the biggest stone she has seen.

The D is basically ''mind comfort'' for me as its a BN Signature Ideal that allows me to see the optical symmetry before purchasing. The D is about $500, has a little better optical symmetry, and is FOUR color shades better. Additionally, if we ever wanted to trade up, it would be 10x easier to sell than the H.

So is it fair to say that size matters?

how do you know the D has better optical symmetry? you''ve already seen it?

Sorry to confuse you but if it were me I''d prefer the 1.42 D colour (assuming that the cut definitely is equal because the cut to me is so important for sparkle factor).

It''s all opinion and there is no real right answer of course but to me personally the colour IS important. I have an E coloured diamond and I love the reassuring feeling that my diamond is high quality and not at all yellow. For her to know you bought her a D means that you got ''the best'' there is for her. I chose my own ring but if hubby had done it I''d be really proud to know he did the research and chose only the best colour for me. Just being honest with you.

1.42 carats is a lovely size stone. I have a 1.53 and it''s beautiful :)

'and I love the reassuring feeling that my diamond is high quality and not at all yellow'

Just to clarify, an H to most people is still a very white diamond and not at all yellow, not the icy white of a D or E but still white. Also there are plenty of J's and K's which look very white, especially face up.

Different priorities for different people, but an H is a great middleground, if both cuts were equal and excellent, then no question I would choose the larger H - in a heartbeat. Your GF might prefer the higher colour, but maybe like many women she too would prefer size.

ETA - of course we have to take into account which lab/s have graded these diamonds too. A GIA D might not be an EGL or IGI D possibly.

I have a 1.77 H and it is very white...my finger is a 7.5 and it looks fine. So you know which one I am voting for!

Unless the stone is an estate piece, I would take the D color. If the stone is set in an Edwardian or Art Deco ring, the color wouldn''t matter to me (especially if it''s an original Asscher cut).

Delonn, one thing that I'd strongly advise you is to only buy from a vendor with a lifetime upgrade policy if you ever think for any reason you'd want to change the stone, even if to upgrade color and clarity and not size. You will lose money reselling any diamond usually. And an H might be easier to sell than the D. I should add that where you live and what her friends and family have will influence the size range she'd be comfortable with. I know that I wouldn't have been comfortable with a 1.7 at age 21. But now that I am older (have kids college age!), I am ready for my larger diamond! Of course, prices go up and it's also a very nice thing to buy a diamond at the outset that will be worn for a lifetime.

Anyway, I am posting some pictures of the diamonds I brought home on my fingers so you can get an idea of the size on a 5.5 finger. Also, both stones are H color. This is the 1.63 (7.6mm).

One more of the two side by side in natural light, not sunlight..they look white to me!

Do I get to pick a 1.6G? I'm a color snob...I might pick the smaller stone...depending on the stone...I do have an good size H pendant in a bezel and I have to admit I don't see color...

Those are really pretty dseeker!

I''d take the 1.71 H...

The H, without a doubt!

DSeeker - glad to hear you're still on the boards after purchasing your rock. I started to think twice about the a 1.71 as I thought it might be too big on a 5.5 finger. I think it IS fair to say that size matters for a lot of people... I love my 1.51ct diamond on my size 5.25 finger... but I would have no hesitation about going bigger someday if the time were right for us!

I'm color-sensitive too, but as someone mentioned previously, a well-cut H could face-up nearly as white as a D... if your debate were between a D and a K, I might feel differently... but an H grade is usually nothing to worry about in terms of "yellowness"

I'm wondering why the D would be so much easier to sell? Is it a better certification? Different vendor?

I think that 1.7 is definitely not too big for her finger - you shouldn''t worry about that at all. Even if it seems big at first, she will quickly get used to it after the inevitable shrinkage sets in! That being said, I''m color sensitive and can see a difference face up between well cut Gs and Es and I prefer the icy white E. But you can''t consider each factor in a vacuum due to limited funds on your part and the limited diamond inventory out there, and other things such as size and clarity come into play (I ended up choosing the G over the E for some of those reasons, and by the same token, I''d take an H that''s a 2.2 carat any day over a 1.7 E!). A 1.6 E or F would probably be an ideal compromise, but between your two stones, the H sounds like the winner.

I would go for the bigger one, without a doubt.

I think I''m in the minority here, but honestly, I''d take the D in a heart beat. A 1.4+ stone is an AWESOME size. I personally have a "D" e-ring stone (very good cut), and "I" earrings (ideal cut) and when I compare them, I can definitely see a color difference. I think for anything aside from my e-ring I''d be fine w/ not "colorless" but I LOVE that on my finger I have something soooo icy white. But it really depends on her preferences...some people prefer a slightly warmer color, and some prefer the iciness of the colorless stones.

HOWEVER, I like the idea of finding a place that has a trade-up policy. In the case that she eventually finds a 1.4 stone to be too small (which I doubt she will for a while), then she can go bigger, without comprising the color.

I think this is really a personal decision. You''re going to find people who firmly would want each choice. I have a 5.5 finger also, and I don''t feel that the 1.7 would be too large, but that''s also in part because of the area of the country I live in, the kind of job I have, and the size of my friends'' rings. She might be color sensitive, she might feel feel self-conscious over the size, or she might love the size...it really does depend on the individual person. Has she looked at rings at all? How big are the rings of your friends? What kind of work does she do? I think all these things really factor in. And preference can change over time too. My dream ring when I started looking was essentially the D that you are looking at...I wanted a 1.4-1.5 D-E. But, as time went on, I saw such beautiful larger stones on woman and I decided I''d rather have a 1.8-2.0 H-I. So, I guess what I''m saying is that you''re going to get a lot of different opinions from the woman here, but none of them may fully express how your GF would feel about it. I think you need to find a way to figure out what her opinion would be...

Size.

I know I''m in the minority but I''d go with the 1.42 D. I''m color sensitive and have an F and love it. A 1.42 is pretty big (bigger than the non-pricescope norm) and on a 5.5 (Average size is 6) that''s going to look pretty darn big! Especially if you choose a thinner band.

I believe all Blue Nile Signature Stones (love BN btw), are AGSL000 (rounds).

~~Size all the way!!!!

I would go with the 1.71. As the question of it being too large for her 5.5 finger, no way! I have a 1.72 on a 4.5 finger and I think its perfect

I''m a color girl...I''d take the 1.42 D.

H is below my preferable range.

Assuming it is eyeclean and IDEAL cut, I am a size girl. H is a wonderful color, I would have NO qualms at all. My vote is BIGGER!
2.gif

Yep, if eyeclean and cut being equal, go for the size. You probably won''t see the color unless you hold it side by side with a D stone. Size is always good. The bigger the better.

I''m no expert but I''m in the minority and I would definately choose color over size. I have often contimplated upgrading especially after Mara took the leap but I am extremely color sensitive. I see many rings on people across the country (I travel extensively weekly) and most larger stones I see appear very white but then they move their hand a little and I notice the color immediately. This could also be because their cut isn''t and ideal and they are probably not well educated Pricescoper''s. I hope this helps. I honestly believe it''s personal preference.
